This is hopeful, although I can't see why they wouldn't support the democratically elected government in the first place. Because Fatah and Hamas aren't much different IMO.

They are different.  Fatah wants to recognize Israel and Hamas doesn't.  Fatah wants to negotiate and Hamas doesn't.  Abbas is much more moderate than the members of Hamas.

Does this mean the world won't end?

I think Bush took the wrong approach.  We should stop funding Palestine AND Israel.  If we want them to kiss and make up, we shouldn't have to bribe them for it.

The Palestinians need help. Nobody in Israel is going to go without water if we cut their aide off. That's the difference.

True...  but don't they already receive a lot of funding from Europe?

I'm not sure of the exact numbers at this point. The first wave is supposed to come via the U.N. World Food Program.
