By now I'm sure we've all seen the weird images on Google Maps...UFOs, Area51, crop circles...etc. And I'm sure we're all familiar with the newest feature, Street View, which basically gives you the perspective of someone standing on the street at the location you choose.
But this one is new to me. Go here.
Yes, that is an actual link to an image found on Google Maps. What the fuck?
One, why can I zoom in this far? If you look at the scale, one inch is approximately equal to five feet. Now, if I go to a place like New York City, which is also highly detailed, the closest I can zoom in is to get one inch equal to 50 feet. Why can I zoom in this far at this one particular point?
Two, why is that area in such high resolution and detail? Look at the area immediately surrounding it. There's either no image at all or it's incredibly blurred...but at this one point, you can make out individual footprints and even tell what people are wearing.
Three, why is that guy in the middle looking directly up at the camera?
Now, if you don't believe me...go ahead and zoom out. Eventually you'll see that you end up right in the middle of Africa. Want to find out something even stranger? Try zooming back in. You'll notice you can't zoom in as far.
Odd, isn't it?
