Buy another GB of RAM and a decent GPU. Your CPU will hold you back a bit and finding a Socket A CPU will be tough.

You could get a decent GPU and a GB of RAM for less than $200 anyway, that'd probably be ok.

yeah - the GPU is fine, I ran it no problems for a year - but I did have more RAM. RAM is the  best value for money upgrade, - getting a new CPU might be more trouble than it is worth, so I'd so another GB of RAM, and look at a newer GPU maybe?

You could upgrade to a slightly better GPU for not that much money, as for processers, you could upgrade to a cheap mobo(like mine, works great ) and a decent AM2 for under $200 as said before, possibly much less if you shop around online.  Other then that upgrading the RAM is the only thing you could really do.  Depends on your budget.

Then its not just the RAM, I run on all low with only occasional system lag during heavy graphics(my 5200FX pumping hard) with only a gig of ram.

That's because the FX5200 is a complete piece of shit. You really shouldn't be using it to play BF2. The worst GPU I've played it on was an FX5900XT - and that was bad enough. A 7600GT will run BF2 beautifully, you don't need any more than that and could probably get away with less.

If you're going to change Mobo/CPU then don't go AM2 - worst decision you could possibly make. If you can find a 939 board, 939 CPUs cost next to nothing these days (A 3700+ would be ideal for BF2) and you'll be able to reuse your memory.

I'm sorry, but whatever you spend will just be an overkill on some other part. I recommend you save up a bit more and get a new machine!

Your rig is almost exactly the same as my old computer (except the GPU). Mine is an AMD 2400 XP with a 5200FX. The CPU was the bottle neck. If you do as Bertster7 says and get a better graphics card you will probably need some OCing of the CPU to get a good gaming experience, but I'm not sure how good that motherboard is for OCing. I rarely got more than 15 fps on that machine, and once I bought my new PC it was a world of difference. There's a difference between making your old comp able to run BF2 (which it probably can now) and making it BF2 'worthy'. Anyway it's worth a try even without OCing. You'll just have to avoid the Hotel on Karkand and the Construction Site on Sharqi... oh and forget Mashtuur City and Kubra Dam all together.

buy another matching set of 512mb x 2 ram or just get 2gb of value ram for about $100 or less and get a 7600, either the gs or gt.   either that or find a socket 939 mobo/processor combo on ebay for dirt cheap and get another gb of ram.  there, there's two options.
