I thought you were one of those people that didn't beleive in Global Warming and Greenhouse gasses and stuff? (don't get me wrong, it might not be you)

I find it funny that alot of people deny Global Warming, but when China suddenly becomes the top polluter it's all "omg they're reuining teh planets"
Ok take away global warming, but what about pollution? Environment is more important than global warming, even if the Earth is not artificially warming up, people can still get cancer and heart problems due to the air pollution.

Wow... some good points are being made by both sides in this thread.  On the one hand, China has way more people than us.  On the other, pollution is pollution.

I say we stop trading so much with China, and then watch as their economy has to adapt.  Helping the world's largest country rise in its consumption and standard of living isn't such a bright idea when looking at it in terms of having to share the world's resources with them.  We're giving them too much too fast, and both our environment and standard of living are starting to suffer for it.

The many ozone holes and resultant skin cancer increases testify to the need to do something about pollution.

And wasn't there an AJ article about the US's carbon emissions dropping in 2006?

About 85% of your possesions comes from China so what are we giving them?

China's economic growth (along with India's) is the major contributing factor to global economic growth figures at this moment. If China's economy slows down, there will likely be a global economic downturn, and you won't be better off. Right now, America imports more from China than exports to it. By trading less with China, all you're doing is increasing price levels in the US.

Also, note you said "share the world's resources with them". These resources are not America's either. The US has no more claim to them than any other country, so why is it bad that the US has to share them with China? The per capita level of income and resource consumption in America compared to China is much higher. Think of all the people in China living below the poverty line, living with a lower standard of living, and I'm sure you'll agree with me that if anyone should decrease their consumption of resources, it should be America before China.

But I do agree with your point about pollution being pollution. I believe that to encourage development doesn't necessarily have to be at the detriment of the environment.

@Pubic
The ozone layer is not due to CO2, but due to CFCs, which have been mostly outlawed. I thought the ozone hole has closed up now.

Our cash....  We trade too much with them.  We should be diversifying who we get our products from more.

Good points, but this becomes a non-issue if we shift more of our trade to other Third World countries.  Indonesia could produce more of our products, for example.

Good point, but my argument is that China has too many people.  It's not our fault that they decided to procreate so much, so why blame us for using more?

I'm glad we agree there.

While you're correct about CFC's, you are incorrect about the hole.  The ozone hole still exists, and it passes over areas of Chile and Australia as the Earth rotates.

about 3 percent of my goods come from china. I refuse to buy ANYTHING from them since I went to a flag day parade last year. My lil girl got an American flag. I saw it and thought it looked odd. It was red white and PURPLE. I said wtf let me see that, right next to the stars they had written ever so proudly MADE IN CHINA!!!!!!!!! I was flabbergasted wrote my bank, who actually handed out the flags, and told them my complaints. I since refuse to buy ANYTHING made in china.....
