Burst or Auto. Why go on single shot? If you can aim properly and accurately, it can save you a split second which can be very important.

burst annoys me, but i dont use any unlocks except G3, so i have to use M16 for USMC.

I always stay on Auto because I can still fire one round at a time but if some noob runs up to me I can still put the rest of the clip into his chest and live.

I use auto, almost without fail. I switch to semi for tagging people at looong range, but usually just use short controlled bursts of automatic fire.
Unless I get bored, have a nice large target/target rich environment, or just feel like letting rip; THEN I go full auto and empty a clip at someone.

Burst. Provides a good balance of control and damage at close and medium range, as well as ammo control, and I can pop em off pretty quick at close range if need be. Plus, that 'thwak-thwak-thwak' of three rounds of lead hitting my target is so satisfying.
Even if I have a full auto weapon, I'm firing it off in 2- and 3-round bursts - ammo control and accuracy again. I only use the full auto in a panic or when I'm doing some sort of kamikaze run just to mess around.
As far as single shot.. Maybe for sniping and long range stuff, but in medium to close range you'll probably get creamed unless you can hit the head pretty damn well. Only plus sides I'd give this would be if you don't have many rounds left and aren't in a position to get a supply drop, and for poppin' head shots, or for providing covering/distraction fire while someone moves in to flank so you don't use up too much ammo doing so.

With auto you can do both, so no need for single/burst.
Um, auto, because that way you have ALL THREE modes at your fingertips (heh) just by exercising a little trigger control:
tap = single
press = burst of 2 or 3
hold = spray
Just as with real guns! What a concept!
Now if I'm sniping with the L85 then I do go to single shot. But that's because snipers have a lot of time on their hands.
