I have 2 laptops and 2 computers in my room that are all connected to the internet, no problems.  they all go through my network switch , which then goes to the wall, to the router, and into the great big internetz.  the problem is that none of the computers show up on the My Network Places screen.  I want to be able to share files between these computers, but they dont recognize each other.  I have tried running the "Setup a home or small-office network" thing on all of them, but it didnt work.  Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

note: I'm pretty good with computers all around, but I fail at internet connections/networking/things like that

if it's not firewalls then check the workgroup of each pc.
right click on my computer > properties > computer name.

make sure they all match, "home" etc

once they've all been restarted check the network again.

if it still isn't working try the LAN connection to see if the hub is creating an IP address or if it is pre set.
If they are preset to the same it will have some troubles.

hope that helps

Or another way into accessing computer files would be:

Open up "My Documents"
In the address field type this in:
\\computername     -  This will only show the shared folders that computer has
or to directly acces the C:\ drive you put \\computername\C$

What he said is the best as small networks with windows often seems to fail anyway. (but else try to have the same workgroup name on all of them).

ok the two PCs are connected to the same workgroup (i will worry about the laptops later), except when i go to My Network Places, non of the shared folders on the other comp show up.  As a test I shared the C:  drive on the other comp, and it still did not show up.  I made sure they are in the same workgroup, and I even checked and it said that they were, so the deffinetly recognize each other

Make sure the workgroups are called the same thing, make sure you have file and printer sharing enabled, make sure firewalls are configured properly - it can be a bit of an awkward bitch to get working properly, but it's usually ok.
