That's a bit of a backwards way of looking at it. Most religions started out with good intentions, not as ways to control (I've never seen a Buddhist monk trying to oppress other Buddhists).syndicat111 wrote:
Religion is present to give mankind a purpose; something to believe in, to live for. Some need a purpose in order to survive. To say that one religion is right and all others fail is ridiculous, but instead heavily influenced by culture. Most religions were created to control lives, to dominate women and to generally meet the needs of those who claimed to be in contact with god (priests etc).
Ideals have lived on through the ages hence why we have religion today. To say that if you do not believe in one religion is wrong - what about people living in Africa / 3rd World Countries who are, in most respects, untouched by Western beliefs and so consequently ignorant of Western religions (Christianity etc.) - are they going to hell because they never knew about others beliefs? No. So why would God put us in the situation where half of us are blessed enough to have knowledge about religion, whilst simultaneously damning everyone else to hell.
That is why religion and mankind fail.
Africans going to hell? This is a little off. Christians don't believe that if you don't know about God then you go to hell.
On topic: Most religions are there to guide people with moral and spiritual issues. There is nothing wrong with the average (non-extremist religion).
Mankind fails since he is able to corrupt an institution with pure intentions.

I think most religions initially had good intentions. It's just that they've been interpreted and twisted to look fucked up. You can partly blame the religion for allowing that, so i'd say both. Leaning towards Mankind though.
They both fail equaly hard. Man corrupts religon, religion can corrupt man.
Thanx. Can I play at your backyard?too_money2007 wrote:

It's not the religion that is at fault, it's the people who use it as an excuse to carry out their own plans and actions.
I point you to prison populations. A demographic would likely suggest that a majority associate with some religion, probably Christianity at least in this country. Then what have those people been accused of: stealing, murder, dishonesty, and all sorts of things not condoned by the "rules" so to speak, of that religion. People aren't good at controlling themselves at all. Someone may believe stealing is wrong, but in some situations, peer pressure, desperation, or some other cause will block that moral thought. People can't even follow the laws of man; how on earth could we follow the laws of God?
I also don't care for how religion has mutated into a political entity since it should be seperate. There are groups of any denomination for just about any and every political cause. People identify religious figures as liberals and conservatives and that shouldn't matter to you since you didn't join/leave a religion for political gain. The very idea is like asking a hash-slinging burger jockey how he feels about abortion before paying him!

Mankind fails to act according to the ideals put forth by religion. Religion in general teaches mankind principles that will lead to better humanity. There certainly are exceptions such as the ancient religions which demanded human sacrifices and such. The rub comes in the fact that we have free will. For example, I fully believe that adultery is wrong, however I still have the choice to run off with the local hottie. Has religion failed if I choose to abandon my family and have wild sex with a younger woman? If my religion has not taught me that adultery is wrong, it has failed in a sense, but I still made the choice which leaves me ultimately responsible.
To specifically address your last question, men twist Christianity when using it to justify any criminal activity. I cannot speak for other religions.
Another aspect of this is that there is a vast difference between true faith and religion. If I was just going to church because I grew up that way, because I felt obligated, or because of social status my “religion” is unlikely to have a significant influence on my behavior. In contrast, if I truly believe in the existence of God and honestly try to follow the teachings of the sacred text I read, that is much more likely to have a real impact. In summary, religion and mankind fails, true belief does not.

Religion is the excuse some men use to carry out our ancient inherited barbaric tendencies. Considering our species and its evolutionary history I would have a hard time saying mankind has failed. However that book isn't finished.
Creationism is not a requirement for faith in something greater ... let that marinate in your head for a bit .sergeriver wrote:
No, because religion as a system of beliefs, was created by mankind. If you are religious you may believe that God created us, but the codes, rules and laws of religion are a creation of mankind.blademaster wrote:

Depending on your personal beliefs yes. Obviously if we are here we were created came into existence at some point. Unless you want to get into a discussion that requires us to stop think of events as past, present, and future. I fear that would seriously derail the topic though.sergeriver wrote:

I believe in evolution because of the large amount of scientific evidence that proves it and also because this clip puts the two ideas into context, somewhat of how the creationist view of how we came about is a bit silly. Remove this if you don't think it has a relevance, I don't want to derail anything.
