What video editing software do people use???

I've searched for this because i'm sure its been mentioned before but alas i couldn't find it.
I was just wondering what software do people use to edit films and stuff that are recorded through fraps??
Also i would like to know if its free, because i don't need it that badly and i'm not really willing to buy any software.

sorry dude, my isp is jacked up this afternoon, and sites are doing strange things and generally being very slow.
