We here in New York have had a smoking ban since May of 2003, just FYI.
Cigarette smoking is a choice. Yeah, okay, most things are. It is however, a stupid choice. Now if your going to make a stupid decision, who am I to stop you? If it only affects you, then whatever, I don't care. Fact of the matter is that smoking will adversely affect the health of all the people around you, spreading cancer causing agents amongst the populous of the building you are in, mainly the restaurants, pubs/bars ect. Thats why it is considered a public health issue, no?

There is nothing worse than a chick who smokes. Their skin, hair, clothes, and mouth reek of a combo of smoke, perfume, deodorant , and most likely alcohol. I see it every night I work. Thank god my girlfriend doesn't smoke and rarely drinks. She is a vegetarian though....
A few years ago we had similar law changes, but they were only restricted to pubs/clubs/restaurants, and theres no distance restriction. Some places have now created outdoor areas in which you can smoke.
I don't smoke, so the law didn't affect me in a bad way; now I don't come home smelling like ciggarettes, coughing up foul-tasting phlegm. Good change if you ask me.

I don't live in the UK, but I applaud the UK government for their courage to stand up to the smoking lobbyists. This decision will undoubtedly affect the health of hundreds of thousands UK citizens in a positive way. And not only that, it will also - on the long run - reduce the cost of smoking-induced illnesses to the NHS.
The German government has already banned smoking in all public offices, buildings and train stations, and is currently working on legislation to make smoking illegal in all bars, restaurants, and clubs. But due to the complex federal legal situation this can take a while. Thus, every state ( Bundesland ) in germany has its own regulations atm, with no federal law being in place.
Personally, I can't wait for the day when I can enter my favourite bar, club or disco without having to put up with passive smoking, and the foul stench of smoke in my hair and on my clothes the next morning. It's simply disgusting.
With that being said, I realize that - statistically speaking - more people die each year from alcohol abuse than die from smoke related illnesses, and that's surely tragic. But alcoholics don't affect my health in the same way that smokers do, so I guess the two situations really cannot be compared.

At the marketing company I work at, they told me that when Ireland imposed the ban, sales of deodrant shot up. Some of you seem to think that a smokeless bar full of sweaty people and stale beer will smell like pot pourri, I think there will be some suprises.
