My new computer came with a Lightscribe Samsung DVD/RW re-writer. I have a problem with it.

It refuses to burn DVDs.

It can burn CDs perfectly, read DVD/RWs perfectly, but it CAN'T BURN DVDs!!!!!!!! Argh...

I will RMA it if I must; but I came across a weird thing in my device manager on Vista.

There are 2 devices...when I have 1 optical drive. Could this be the problem?

There are no drivers for this optical drive, it just works on any computer - Like many optical drives.

Should I disable one device? Or is it an RMA problem?

You've tried the likes of Nero, yes?
In the BIOS, is it displayed as a DVD-RW etc?

Remove/Uninstall the one that is not the lightscribe drive, reboot and retry. Other than that I have no idea.

I don't have 2 drives..... I have 1 and the device manager is showing 2.

Perhaps one is a Virtual Drive, like Daemon Tools or MagicDisc. Try disabling it.

Yes that's the point. Uninstall the one that is not the lightscribe drive by right clicking on it and choose remove or uninstall (can't remember what option shows). Reboot your windows and retry to burn a DVD.

That's how it is on mine.

Seems odd that both are detected as SCSI devices. A virtual drive should be, but unless your Samsung drive is SATA then it seems strange. Have you looked on the manufacturers website and checked for firmware updates?

No firmware for it. And yes, it is a SATA optical drive.

Use your old drive as a frisbee,  buy a new one.

They're cheap.

it started when I got this computer. I never tested burning a DVD from the optical drive till I formatted my HDD and then re-installed Vista.

Could it be, that if it is connected to the wrong port then it will only work with CDroms for burning?

There are 4 slots, 2 are red and 2 are black. I have one red slot taken up by the HDD and I have the optical drive in a red slot as well. The wiring for the optical drive is red as well. I am guessing it should be in the red SATA slot?

It could be, because my Raptor won't work if it is plugged into a different SATA socket - I can't change it from slave to master, whereas if I change the socket then it works fine. So try another socket!

But the other sockets are different? It wont harm the computer, will it?

OMG! Again! Again overclockers put a hardware thing in the wrong socket. ( they did this as well with my HDD, so I couldnt boot ). Fucking idiots. It's working now.
