Ok, so last night I was watching 'Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?', and one of the questions was:

'How many sides are on a triangle?'

Well that's probably the easiest question out there, right? The answer is obviously 3.
Oh no. All the students, and even the contestant, answered '4 sides on a triangle'.

And surprisingly, they got the answer correct.
Am I missing something here?

Is it a two dimensional or three dimensional shape?

I'm pretty sure it's 2D, otherwise they would have side 'triangular-based pyramid' or something like that.

...there are three sides. I'm pretty sure you got the question wrong, no offense. If not I will need to commit ritualistic suicide over my math textbooks.

And you are sure they did not say 'quadrilateral'...
I was fairly sure that a triangle has three sides.  I mean, you think I could get that right after two years of university

The host probably said, "Triangular pyramid".

I swear it said 'How many sides are on a triangle?'.
And if I mixed up quadrilateral with triangle, kill me now. It's impossible to mix those words up.

I even found this on some random blog. Some lady posted:

Some lady wrote:

Did anyone tape/dvr it? Our family is arguing over the triangle question but no one can remember exactly what the question was. The answer was 4 I think. If anyone knows please write.

Question was, "A RECTANGLE has how many sides?"

Maybe use a q-tip every so often

The tri- prefix means 3. Know your etymology.

My dad was the one who retold me the question, but I was pretty sure it said 'triangle'.
Oh well.
