I currently have an Opteron 170 (dual core) clocked at 2.6ghz. I currently run a evga 7900gt. I'm looking to get an xfx 8800gts (320mb). anyone know if i'll have any problems as far as my cpu bottlenecking the 8800gts? and has anyone gone from a 7900gt to an 8800gts? Whats the improvement like? thanks. karma for repliers.
How much RAM do you have?
sorry, i got 2gb of ddr400. (4x512mb patriot and ocz with the same settings)
2 gigs should be enough to prevent any kind of bottleneck but the more memory you have the better. You may want to consider upgrading your RAM to 1 gig sticks and going to 4 gigs, especially if you're running Vista.
Bottleneck has way more to do with the cpu than the memory, just fyi
also depends on the motherboard
Yeah Knuck you should really post the specs for your entire machine.
True, what Mobo are you running, and another concrn with the 8 series cards, are you sure you PSU can handle it? Their very power hungry.jdno_7 wrote:

lol @ this thread.
Your power supply might be enough for a 320mb card but if you wanted the 640 I would get a power supply that's at least 700watt or higher.
let me guess, your gonna say something about me not searching. well smarty pants i did, and found nothing reference an opty 170 and 8800gts so if you don't have anything helpful to add then save it to yourself.
I doubt it - I just upgraded my rig to dual 8800GTS 640mb cards and it runs SWEEEEEEEEET you should have no
probs
probs
Where are you guys getting these crazy power requirements from.Obiwan wrote:

450W is fine for a 8800GTS, 600W for a 8800GTX and 750W for 8800GTX SLI.
You're confusing watts with amps.Obiwan wrote:

I'm running my 8800gts 640 with a 550 watt power supply...
holy shit.... You have enough space on your mobo to sli ? Not fair, my 640 will be covering up one of the pci slots which will make me mad later down the road... Are they easy to over clock ?-101-InvaderZim wrote:

Yes I have enough space on my motherboard to SLi. I doubt I have enough POWER to run more HW (since its its only 600W).
Cant use SATA tho (the video cards cover all of them), and no I cant use PCI either (but I have onboard stuff - Ethernet, Sound etc).
As for running sweeet - kinda lied about it a lil bit. Having trouble with drivers that will allow me to use SLi. At the mo I have it turned off
cos if I turn on SLi, i get strobe lighting thru all my games that I'm playing.
