i'm gonna go with the x-fi extreme gamer and stick with my current logitech precision headset
where is the exact difference between the gamer and the audio version of the x-fi?
i just installed the creative x-fi extreme audio and the highest setting it supports is
hardware rendering on high + eax activated
still the sound is amazing now and the difference between my normal software/medium setting is huge and worth the money, but
i am wondering, why i can´t use the creative x-fi setting ingame?

maybe the card's not good enough? i don't know
The sound should be the same as the x-fi settings in game. It shouldn't change.[pt] KEIOS wrote:

so the difference between the hardware and the x-fi setting is only in performance?
and what about the difference between the quality settings?
I´ve searched the weapon sounds in the objects_client.zip and there are only two different soundfiles for each weapon.
for example, there are g36_1p.wav and g36_3p.wav.
the 1p.wav is more detailed and sounds better, than the 3p.wav but the 1p.wav is much bigger than the other.
so my theory is, that on low quality, you can only hear the 3p.wavs and only few soundsources are hearable.
on medium settings, you still only hear the 3p.wavs but more surrounding soundsources, like mates who are throwing grenades and scream:"kumbulaa!"
on high settings you hear the bigger 1p.wav and the difference on ultra high settings is, you can hear even more different soundsources.
so to all those, who are using the x-fi extreme gamer or higher: i don´t think, that you can hear much more/better than those who only use the cheaper audio-edition.
did anybody has experienced differences?

has anyone gone from the x-fi audio to the extreme gamer? if so what was the difference?
i don´t think, that anyone tested it... most of them just spent a lot of money for marginal effects and tell you, that everything else is crap..
maybe i can tell you in a week, because my gf is getting a new computer with the extreme gamer edition.

The Xtreme Audio is actually not a real X-Fi card. It is a re-badged Audigy SE, thus you are not able to use the X-Fi setting in BF2.

oh ok ... makes sense, +1 sprint
OP: If your budget is that low, stick with a headset purchase. Onboard should be good enough, until you have more cash.

thx for the info, but where is the difference between the hardware and the x-fi settings? i don´t think, that you have a better sound quality with it. is it only a performance plus and more channels?sprint113 wrote:

I've personally never owned or used an x-fi, so I am just reporting what other people have stated in reviews I've read while I was looking to buy a sound card.[pt] KEIOS wrote:

In terms of sound quality "by the numbers", there is a slight increase in sound quality, but unless you have a really good set of speakers/headphones, paired with a really good set of ears, you probably won't notice.
In terms of BF2, you shouldn't notice a change in CPU performance between an Audigy 4 and X-fi, though this might be different if you're going from on-board audio. The X-FI setting I believe just increases the # of voices rendered, which results in perhaps an overall better gaming experience as people say they hear things they never heard before in game, and I think you get to be able to handle the newest version of EAX for some more 3D effects. You also get surround audio rendering over (stereo) headphones, which for some people is a hit or miss.
However, ignorance is bliss, and I am currently content with my on board "HD Audio", so I'll wait for prices to go down along with a low-profile bracket for the X-fi Xtreme Gamer.
