I've always wondered this. I tried googling it this morning but with the terms wet, glass and mark you don't get anything relevant. Does anyone know? I've heard its something to do with condensation but since the glass is impermeable this doesn't sound very likely.

The glass is colder than the surrounding air. The air near the glass condenses onto it. It drips onto the table.

Condensation forms on the outside when air containing moisture is cooled down, thus turning the gas to liquid.

Edit: I thought they taught this in high school?

Ever notice how this only happens with cold drinks?  Try it with a mug of coffee or hot chocolate...no ring.

Put ice in a glass of water, and after a few minutes, you'll have enough condensation to form a ring around the bottom of the glass.

...I learned this in like...sixth grade science.

...and why is this in D&ST?  Moved.

Why should the glass be colder?
Even if the water initially has the temperature of the surrounding air water will vaporize therefore cooling the glass and the water itself.

With the proposal of many threads like this i propose a retard sub forum for the junk drawer, where old pointless, stupid threads get moved, when this happens to your thread you should go /wrists.

Shut up, it's a good question that requires scientific knowledge, therefore it is not pointless, although it is good in JD.
