8 years for a PhD?

I thought in the US it was 3 years for the actual PhD and one pre-PhD year. Anyway that is the amount of time a friend of mine in Houston took. Here the majority of scholarships take 4 years, but there are ways to get longer financial support.

Heeeey genetics.
I'm in my last year of school and I'm looking into genetics/law as some kind of kooky specialist lawyer and just wondering in your newly professional opinion Dr. Hood if you much of a niche for this? At all? Or if not, where could a guy with a genetics/law degree go to make a career for himself?

At long last;

Last Wednesday 2007 06 07 after a public defense of 2 hours; I graduated.

The last year I've been rather low active stat padding my mod account with the man of whom we do not speak, for the simple reason that I was finishing up my studies. Here a PhD normally takes 4 years and when I was close to the end my ongoing projects where dumped. So I had to start three new projects and write it all down in a year.

A year later. 2 projects finished, 2 papers in preparations (1 already published) and since the day before yesterday an extra degree in my pocket. Blood sweat and tears (all too literary) expressed in a little bit of writing on a paper (still awaiting the signature of the rector).

I am happy it is at long last over. Although there are still some loose ends that need the be tied up. But tonight PARTY !!!

I'll be back on duty to ban you all in a couple of days

Cheers,
R

Ps.: If someone here is from Belgium and has a vacancy for someone with an excess of diplomas, you can always send me a PM
I graduated earlier to , got my degree in 4 years started college when I was 17 , done by the time I was 21 , 2 degrees

You should ask me when I've found a job. But I guess I am not your average graduate... By now I can play card games with my diplomas (got 4 diplomas besides high school and numerous other papers that say that I supposed to have some knowledge), yet I haven't got any experience on the work floor besides in the university.

So when I find a job I'll let you know.

congrats...may I ask in what field did you attain your ph.d?
In increasing level of detail:

Science

Biochemistry

Molecular Genetics

Genetics and drug response prediction for Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia...
Nice, I am kinda in the same field. I study Molecular biology but I am more interested in the biophysics. I am doing a PhD in X-ray crystallography.

But in Denmark you can chose to take your PhD in 3+5 years or 4+4 years. in the 3+5 model you first do your master then on to PhD and in the 4+4 your master degree is a part of your PhD.

When ppl say it takes 8 years or so they usually also count the master degree time. And no it is not a big deal. If you can get a master you can also get a PhD, it is just a matter of time.
