How would joining a clan work? You can't change your name, so do you just join the clan as the name you have or do you have to register a new account including the clan name?

Gah, EA is stupid sometimes. They should have made a login account name then a display name, but no, they couldn't think of that..

Yeah...To (attempt to) clarify:

When you launch BF2 you choose an online account to play with.  At the top of that menu there's a place where you can type a "prefix" which can be up to 6 characters long.  That prefix shows up before your username.  So for example before I was in the QXJZ clan I was simply Capt_Kefra.  But I put [QXJZ] into the Prefix slot and now on servers I show up as [QXJZ] Capt_Kefra.  Same with any other prefix.

the best way to do it is to go into your global.con file and edit prefix, you can put any character in that such as | and. etc, just go  C:\Documents and Settings\andrew\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles and open the global file with notepad and GlobalSettings.setNamePrefix "insert prefix here"

Does the global.con file still limit you to only 6 character prefixes? It seems like you can type as much as you want.

Nope.  They still are.  We have two members join that were in a clan which broke up (sorta).  They had their old clan tags still attached to their names.  So a prefix couldn't have fixed it.  It would've said [HARM] SHS-Fox, for example.  Those two started new accounts.  We didn't require them to, but due to bad relations with the past clan, they would do anything to get the old tags off.

For people wanting to keep the stats, they could still play under their old name with like a "NOT" in the prefix.  And then when it's match/scrim time, they could have a separate account with the new tags on.

But in the end, I think you outsmarted DICE.  Should've had an account name and a display name.
