Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf is expected to make an important announcement on extremism during an address to the nation in the next day or two.

This seems to go hand in hand with the New York times story.

The warning came in a document from the Interior Ministry, which said Pakistan’s security forces in North-West Frontier Province abutting the tribal areas were outgunned and outnumbered and had forfeited authority to the Taliban and their allies.:

The Pakistani president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, was warned this month that Islamic militants and Taliban fighters were rapidly spreading beyond the country’s lawless tribal areas and that without “swift and decisive action,” the growing militancy could engulf the rest of the country.

The warning came in a document from the Interior Ministry, which said Pakistan’s security forces in North-West Frontier Province abutting the tribal areas were outgunned and outnumbered and had forfeited authority to the Taliban and their allies.

“The ongoing spell of active Taliban resistance has brought about serious repercussions for Pakistan,” says the 15-page document, which was shown to The New York Times. “There is a general policy of appeasement towards the Taliban, which has further emboldened them.”

The document was discussed by this country’s National Security Council on June 4 while General Musharraf was present, the document notes…

“It’s a policy of appeasement,” said Brig. Mahmood Shah, who was the senior Pakistani government official in charge of security in the tribal areas until last year. “It hasn’t worked. The Talibanization has increased in the past year.”

Sounds like a different tune than what he was singing in November.

Why the change of heart? Didn't he give them what they wanted? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waziristan_Accord
Could it be that some people can't be reasoned with? Now that civil war could be on the horizon is it possible that it is growing out of Musharrafs control?

What if this is part of the Iran invasion plan?

Pakistan will fall. I don't mind Iran getting nukes - they're relatively rational - but Pakistani nukes in the hands of the Taliban would definitely necessitate a rather hastily prepared missile shield. Chances are India would intervene anyway.

The US wouldn't be able to handle a Pakistan mission. The US army would get its ass handed to it on a plate. It would be Vietnam x 1,000,000. When the civilian populace hates your guts you don't stand a chance.

Pakistan had more to do with harbouring terrorist than Iraqi ever did. See how we ask nations with nukes nicely, to chase terrorists across their boarders and ppl wonder why Iran is clambering for nukes. This is dangerous, because the Pakistani ppl will be pissed at American solders being on their soil and they will rebel against the Regime, who will no doubt brutally suppress them and push the Pakistanis towards an uprising which may see the current dictatorship toppled and replaced with god knows who with their hands on a big red button. The US and Pakistan should stick to air strikes only to try and limit the backlash IMO.

Wasn't the unit charged with tracking him down just disbanded? I don't think the US ever wanted to catch him anyway. If he is caught and executed that is allot of closure on 9/11 which means it can't be used as an excuse to continue the middle eastern rampage.

Its about time Pervez. . . .

Bin Laden's days are numbered now. . . .With the ability to get more "boots on the ground" this puts a serious damper on Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters capabilities to move freely/re-arm/scheme. . . .

I love it!! I would imagine we shall see these miserable fuckers finally defeated since all their senior leadership is being harbored in Pakistan! One can hope!! I wonder how much money it cost to get this type of clearance. . . .I know that the US government has been working for years to get this blockage lifted so more troops can go in and fight these pricks!!

Your the one who lives in the bubble dude. . . . insignificance = Ireland

The two missions couldnt be more dissimilar. . . .  They are no where near the same in any sense of the word.

Bottom line is the USA hasnt been able to really hit the Taliban or al-Qaeda effectively because they are not allowed in Pakistans airspace or territory.  They have been relying on the Pakistan military and "Black Ops" to kill these miserable fanatics.  With the allowance of our forces unempeded by restrictions, the US military will put considerably more pressure/damage on these Islamic militants.  I would imagine we will accrue alot more intelligence and gains by this new direction by President Musharef.
