Spartans, Mongols, and the US Military.

Spartans = Had AMAZING training, and from when they were kids nonetheless. Were an entire state based around military, so it's pretty obvious that they'd have an advanced military for that time. Plus, any 300 people who can fight off a million and kill...I think it was 250K persians? Is BADASS.

Mongols = Some of the most amazing warriors of the time. Emotionless, brutal and savage, they traveled in packs and made no permanent homes. They were a set of badass motherfuckers.

US Military: Even when they were just a militia of farmers and countrymen, they still outpowered the British using Snipers and Guerilla Warfare. They currently have arguably the best and most advanced Air Force, and their Marines are pretty much the best trained in the world.

Not necessarially. The US army can engage a target from thousands of miles away, more troops just means a bigger target.

The Marines! Why is it always the British S.A.S. doing the hard core stuff, even the Ozzy S.A.S. go harder than the Marines. Marines showboat, I went to school with a guy that is now in the Oz S.A.S., he is not human, not saying he is crazy, just tough as nuts. He even says "all the Marines have is numbers". Now numbers is good, numbers rock, but the Marines the best trained?!

Roman Legions easily win. The Roman Legions were so superior in quality to any other military of their time, that they just tramped over everything. There we numerous situations in which they were outnumbered 10 to 1, and they always prevailed. Rome ended up fighting and defeating major ancient civilization of their time.

They are not nearly as important as they were before the 1700's, but when the difference is numbers is millions vs. tens of thousands, and each side has similar technology, it makes a large difference.

Well, the Spartans do come close to Rome.... Their entire culture was based entirely on war. They would kill the smaller and weaker children, and their training got even more extreme from there.

You are comparing a special forces unit (SAS) to ground first responders (Marines). I fyou are going to do that then I take Delta Force.

The Macedonian army of King Phillip the 2nd and his son Alexander 3rd (the great). Developed new weapons (like the sarissa) and new battle tactics/formations (cavalry units and charges). Defeated all of Greece and then attacked Persia and beyond. If Alexander the Great were to not have died then the first of the FIVE Roman invasions would have failed and the Roman empire would have never been. Macedonians FTW.

as for the Spartans: At the height of their cities population they only had 8000 or so citizens. They had the best military man for man but had very few. To put in in a better perspective, the were the Delta Force or S.A.S of their day. The movie 300 is very very incorrect in displaying the battle of Thermopylae in a historical context. It was actually 1000 men that staid, 300 Spartans and 700 Thesbians...also, Spartans were notoriously homosexual (like on a scale of 1 to 10 they were a 1000)

Yes, If you rule out the fact that Athens kicked their ass multiple times, that they lost a good deal of battles as well, that Macedon almost wiped them out and Rome made them into a tourist attraction

I wasn't meaning the Aus S.A.S. are the best, someone else brought up the marines being tops and best trained, I just ment that Oz S.A.S. are trained better. I don't know about being better then "delta" or "Seals". But I do know they take their training from and train with the Brittish S.A.S. who are trained better then either of the U.S. SpecOps or Fire Squads/Teams. To get into the US ones you need to be very tough and hardcore guys that do get well trained. But the guys getting that wouldn't get into the Brits SpecOps, you have to be real smart not just a thug, you have to have two speciallities and speak anpther language, then on top of your two specials they want you to pick one you want to hit the top with.

Oh and Black Hawk Down (Mogadishu/Somalis) vs Operation Barras (Sierra Leone/west end boys).

Also Korea, Vietnam, Present...

I don't think you can go past the old ones like mongols and Alex the great.
