Hey all,
I am sorry to start another thread like this, but I have to, in order to get your help, yes? Anyway.

I was planning on getting a PS3 because my computer is getting kinda old:
P4 HT 3GHz
1GB 400Mhz
6800

Now, I am starting to think of getting a new computer rather than a PS3. However my budged is kinda limited. I just want to see if that's a good deal or If I can find another one or maybe build it myself? Although I have no idea of how to build PC's. The one below is from dell and it would cost me £771. I just copied the whole specification, most of them are useless.

The components that I mostly care about are: a CPU, a GPU and RAM. I would like to have C2D(6600), 8800 GTX and 2GB of ram. I don't mind what HDD nor what sound card. I don't have any knowldged about MOBO.

A PC would be better than a PS3. Even though it's more expensive the PS3 will only ever get as good as DX9 style games. Whereas with that you'd be comfortable with much better looking DX10 games.

That's the problem with consoles in todays world. The PS1 may have lasted 10 years, the PS2/Xbox lasted long but not as long or as impressive, and the 360/PS3 won't even last a couple of years before it looks seriously outdated. Infact they already look outdated.

The guy was asking which one to go for, a PS3 or a PC. I said PC. Because the PC will last longer than the PS3/360, which already looks outdated. The games don't look impressive compared to up and coming PC ones.

Yeah, but massive amounts of preprocessing make that pretty irrelevant.

I don't even think it's (the RSX) as fast as a 7800GTX, it's based on the G70, but it's more of a midpoint between the 7800GT and GTX.

It might not be able to handle the complex shader stuff that DX10 cards can, but it can certainly pump out polygons pretty damn quick.

Anyone can try and build me a PC from overclockers or w/e please. I don't understand much about MOBO, so I am not sure if it supports the GPU, CPU and the ram that I want. Also, I don't have a copy of windows. I would build it myself if it costs less than £771 but I doubt that.

To get those sort of specs for £770, you'd really have to cut corners. Have you included VAT in that? I know DELL usually put the price without VAT up.

For 770ex VAT you could build something nicer, I reckon. DELL systems tend to be, well, shit really.

Its not absaloutely amazing, but you could get either a better graphics card or a better CPU like an E6600.

Plus Vista Home Premium OEM is pretty much on your budget.

BTW, how much do you think I can get from my current PC, if I ebay it?

First of all you dont have complete control of what goes into your rig, the mobo will be a generic Dell one, so don't expect anything too amazing.

But for what you seem to want to do, and your lack of knowledge (no offense ) that doesn't seem too bad.

just get the dell. its a darn good deal. your obviously not an enthusiast, so i wouldnt recommend building your own, unless you want to become more educated about computers and what the inside of your finger looks like. dells arent bad. they seem overpriced because of their excellent warrenties and support. they use "crappy" generic parts, but they are only "crappy" if you are an enthusiast who cares about core speed and things that you dont really notice on the screen, unless of course what is on the screen is benchmarks and raw performance data.

but really. 2gb of ram, e6600, 8800gtx... thats gonna get you further than a lot of people. anything more than that, unless you get like 2 more gb of ram, and you wont really notice anything different in games.

It might be better if you do all the individual parts, check eBya for what prices they reach.

My brother got a Dell and he seems happy enough with it, Dell support are pretty good too. He didn't know how to set up a network that connects with the router through AOL, but they walked him through it without a problem.

read, and maybe think a little, before you speak. it will get him where he needs to go. and if anything is messed up or gets messed up, dell will fix it for him. he doesnt care who made his graphics card or if his motherboard is from ASUS. me and possibly you do because we are enthusiasts. we think in terms of quality parts and raw data and what looks good on paper and if we can squeeze those extra .03GHz of power from our C2D's which wont make a lick of difference when we are playing the game. a normal gamer who just wants to play his damn game and doesnt care what is making that game possible, doesnt care about any of that.
