I always did hate John Howard. His defence minister has just confirmed one of my reasons for hating him.

Shame on Australia. Blood for oil. Truly shameful. We all know that this was what the Iraq war was mostly about but to actually hear it confirmed makes this a tragic day. What makes it worse is that it confirms to Australians that their government lied to them.

Oil is not a bad reason for a war. When oil prices go up, millions of Americans are hurt. Yes, oil companies may be helped by government action to secure oil reserves, but the bigger picture is that the US economy depends on oil and lots of ordinary people are fed by the US economy.

That said, I suspect that oil was only part of the reason for the Iraq war. The Bush administration probably really thought they were going to create democracy in Iraq. I'm not sure what Australia was thinking...

During the lead up to war Australia was signing a free trade agreement with the USA. I am sure our involvement in this invasion smoothed negotiations.

Hang on a second.

When Bush says the war has nothing to do with oil, you have nothing but mistrust.

When Howard says it does, you assume he's being entirely honest and truthful.

Has it occurred to you that just maybe oil is only an excuse?
