A functioning anarchist society would require a far different version of humanity than the one that currently exists. At our current level of development, most of us cannot even imagine how to function without someone to tell us what to do and too many of us cannot function without feeling the need to tell others what to do. Anarchy is not the absence of order, it is the absence of hierarchy, the absence of those in a position of power or control over others. People who do right by those around them and cooperate with others without needing or wanting the politician, the royalty, the soldier, the priest or the police officer to keep them in line. Unfortunately humanity is not ready to cope with life without bosses. We are too irresponsible, greedy, selfish and close-minded. It may take hundreds or even thousands of years for our species to outgrow those tendencies, but we're working on it and we'll get there eventually.

Id go to the Department of Defense and try to find out what the fuck they were doing when this happened, this being Ireland I suspect they were drinking. I pay taxs and expect to see my country in order when I get up in the morning!
I can say i've lived in a complete state of Anarchy!! granted it was only for 24 hours, but we had no government and no police force, not much happened either, so it wasn't all that exciting really, i'm pretty sure I marked the occasion on this very board somewhere..

First port of call would be the supermarket, raid for supplies. Take full advantage of the internet assuming electricity was still on.
Most importantly get to know my neighbours. Its amazing when the power cuts out you suddenly live in a community again.
I think an anarchist period would only be a short transition, communities would immediately band together and implement their own local hierarchies. There may be a brief period of violence, hopefully the majority of decent people would prevail over the minority bully population.
