Just goes to show, you can't beat terrorists through military means. You have to address the causes of terrorism.
Large scale bombing was never used. They should have considered that if they wanted to win.

where he describes how the SAS was waiting for IRA to blow up a police station, and when the IRA guys entered the compound they got slaughtered.
That was the The Loughgall ambush http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provisiona … ne_Brigade  they didn't get the chance to get near the compound, they were mowed down in the van and JCB they were traveling in. No quarter was given as none would have been given if the shown had been on the other foot.
They killed 7 or 8 of them and a civilian who was unlucky enough to be wearing blue boiler suit and was in the area at the time. (the SAS were told the IRA men would be in blue boiler suits)

The IRA did a LOT of very, very bad and despicable things but you gotta hand it to them: they weren't beaten by one of the primary military powers on the surface of planet earth - according to the Brits themselves.
If they had carpet bombed Ireland what it have been a different story? I mean, If they had had ZERO disregard for civillians would it had turned out different?

Yes they did, they still manged to light the fuse to the bomb which blew up the police station. I watched a program on the SAS the other night with this incident. It also was about how they were stationed out there against there will to help fight (in a way) against the IRA.

It was not a tactic that worked, it was not a war and not what they trained for. They resorted in the end to setting up the IRA at times to have a just reason to kill them as there was not a lot else they could do over there.

I think the title is misleading. The British Army hasn't admitted to being defeated, it simply stated it hasn't defeated the IRA.
In any case, who cares? Maybe the British army has something better to do than fight Irish punks? How about Islamic terrorists that actually want to blow up the world instead of just Ireland?

The title is fine - "British Army admits not defeating the IRA". That's exactly what it's saying.

You have serious priority issues. Irish punks?! The fuck?! Who's the bigger priority, a small extremist cell who have the slightest chance of killing you (yes, I say that and I mean it) or a well-equipped, well-organized paramilitary force who have demonstrated time and time again that they will kill your citizens you achieve their aims?

I think you need a reality check.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.
