Hullo all,
Today I bought Vista seeing as I'l need it sooner or later plus I like the looks of it, but I was wondering, if I install Vista will it:

Be able to install over XP

And will it reformat my Harddrive (C:\)

If the first is yes then thats great, if the second is yes, I'm gonna hold off for a day or two till i get my backups sorted

From what I gathered when I installed, it will create a folder called windows.old which contains all of your folders, files and programs from XP.  It also auto-installs most of the basic drivers you need for your PC (i.e. Video, Sound, Network, etc).

It's always a good idea to back up the files however.  When I installed Vista on my machine it did something similar to a CHKDSK and erased a bad sector on my hardrive and it corrupted a .dat file I used for Guild Wars.  Other than that, all my files were there after the install.

Yeah, you gotta backup all your stuff before uninstalling XP and installing Vista.

You don't have to un-install anything.  Just install over it, pull the files you want from the windows.old directory and then go to disk cleanup and choose to "Delete Old Windows Installations" or something to that effect.

it depends actually, i 'upgraded' (lol) to vista and a map named windows.old was created in my documents showing all old programfiles and my documents and stuff.
of course, this can't be done when your hdd is almost full...
but i have heard from some guys that the map wasn't created with their installation so i wouldn't take it for sure

It can, yes, like I said when I installed it, it corrupted a .dat file that Guild Wars used and I had to re-download the .dat file.

It is always a wise decision to back up any important files.  This is not debatable.  Back them up and install.  If it works they way it should, great.  If not, at least you have backups.

Yes.

Not if you don't want it to. You can do an express upgrade, without losing any of your files.

Did to that with Office07, does it work in the same way? If so thats great

Btw, i'm gonna make the backups given the warnings in any case, just a question of where the hell SW EAW and FOC saves are kept, cant find em

Edit:
To Clarify I bought Vista as a whole, not the upgrade one if that affects the potential upgrade any
