I'm planning to slap together a new comp in about a month. My current PC is a:

3ghz P4 HT
1GB RAM
6800GT

Since I'm in Canada I'm planning to do all the buying at www.ncix.com
These are the parts I've picked out, and once again, this isn't final or anything, I'll probably be changing the
parts based on what has gone down in price and what rebates are going on in a month.

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18495 x2
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=21228
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=21408
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=24886
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18885

I'm also thinking of throwing in a CPU and maybe a GPU heatsink. I'd be building this PC on my own which
is something I'm fine with. I'd salvage a pair of SATA harddrives from my old comp (120gb each) and also a
soundcard which I believe is a Creative Audigy Value. I also need to throw in a DVD drive.

I'd just like some advice on which particular brands/products to get, or thoughts on if this is a good plan.
Also, is that soundcard still ok? I don't really have any high end speakers or anything so I thought a new
soundcard would be unnecessary. From what I've heard the tech isn't going to change that much in a month.
Right now these parts are about 1500 all together and it would be nice if that could get a bit lower.

That's how I roll, BITCH!

I would go with C2D rather than AMD CPU.

Well, I've read that AMD dual cores preform better. I don't really want to get into the whole OMG INTEL/AMD SUX thing, I think the differences are pretty minor. I guess I would go with what's cheaper.

What have you been reading? Obviously thats not right, AMD aren't even close to Intel at the moment.

Going with what's cheaper is stupid when it comes to getting a rig that you are happy with, spend what you can and you'll be good.

So go for an Intel CPU and a Skt 775 board and you'll be laughing!

p.s. Don't think that case is anything special for the price, I'm sure they'll be a lot of suggestions for an Antec 900 instead.

I spent about 15 mins last night getting these components together, so stuff like case/mobo isn't well thought out. I grabbed that case because it was the only one with a built in psu that felt big enough, and because it was cheap. I guess I'll try looking at an alterate build with an Intel CPU/mobo then.

I din't realise it had a PSU, definetly don't go for it. Pretty much all cases with PSU's installed are shite. Get a decent 600watt for your system. Have a look at Leetkyle's little guide on the different components. That will tell you all you need to know.

Ok, thanks. 2 quick questions though: are the stock CPU/GPU fans fine? Is that sound card ok?

Yeah, timings don't seem too good for a 6400, try for CAS4.

If you're not looking at OC'ing then the stock cooler is fine.

On the sound front, if you're an audiophile and have a decent set of 5.1 speakers then you might consider a soundcard. Integrated audio has improved a lot over the years, and is pretty acceptable now.

ya i heard about the 6400. But besides that well my setup work. Oh and is the case any good. I havent actually looked into it. I heard that getting a new PSU would be good. but I dont know. What do you guys think. I was also thinking about getting a sound card but for now I just want to build a decent rig and worry about the sound later.

I can't reccommend what you've currently got, but it'll work.

Definetly get a case without a PSU and get a seperate one.

well I am a budget of about $1500. So this seems like a good rig to build for that price. But im not to sure. Could you maybe recommend a good case and PSU. Cause I have no idea of what to get.

I've got pretty confused here......I thought I was talking to the OP.

Your Rig is fine mate, looks good.

That case is pretty good aswell.

I'll have a look for a PSU now.

As it looks like you might want SLi in the future you could get a more powerful one, but this should be fine

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817189011 (Its based around the Thermaltake Toughpower series, I think they stole the design!)

ya i hear the c2d is what you want for gaming these days. and while ive heard that ncix is a good site, their prices have always been higher than newegg.com's when im shopping. just make sure youve compared. browse at www.anandtech.com and www.tomshardware.com to see different products compared.

To Trex:

I've heard alot of good things about NCIX from other people I know, it sounds very reliable. You probably don't need a new optical drive, but for hard drive it depends if it is IDE or SATA.

You should definitely get another gig of RAM, it really helps in speed.

Your 2nd priority should be getting a C2D processor after July 22 when the price drops instead of a shitty Pentium 4 like I still have.

What motherboard is it? Some just require a BIOS flash to support Core 2 Duo.
