Well, how much can you buy a car for?  Thats the important question.  Do some research, if you can't find a car that is within your price range, then buy the video card, because you'll not have the money for the car anyway.  If you can find one that you can afford soon, save up for it.

I don't think 400 could pay for a decent portion of a car, unless your getting an ancient thing out of the 70's.. but then again, what do i know about cars
Well that $400 is just money I've saved up doing odds and ends around my house and the neighbors homes for a few years running.
Once I get a job, I can't start thinking about which car I want. If I don't get a job soon, there won't be much point in looking for a car, I won't have the money for it.

The minimum legal driving age in Canada seems to be 16. I guess he's saving up till he becomes old enough to drive.

If you are saving up for a card to run Crysis....first off, wait until it comes out !!!!

...by which time said video card will most likely be much cheaper.  In the meantime, continue doing your oddjobs for people and saving the money.  Given that Crysis is probably several months away at best, you should be able to get that card and still have at least a couple hundred dollars saved up towards a car.  Maybe if you are a good worker and show initiative, your parents will notice and be willing to help pay.

I don't know about in Canada, but here in the mid-U.S. you can mow average-sized lawns (like those you find in a town/city) in about 45 minutes to an hour, and for AT LEAST $20-30 USD, depending on where you live...bigger lawns take more time, and you get paid more accordingly.  I knew kids that earned enough money to buy a decent car (for a teen) from just one summer of mowing lawns like it was a regular 40 hour-a-week job.

Don't have a lawnmower?  Spend that $300 dollars to get one, and you could make your money back within a week, and maybe then some...

Let me get this straight, you don't have a steady income yet they think you can afford to run a car?

Theres some broken logic here, buy the card at least it wont eat all your cash from now until eternity in running the damn thing lol.

I want an 8800GTS 320MB. I can buy one for $300 Canadian off of some site.

Now, my parents say no because they want me to save up for a car. Their theory is because I don't have a steady income, since I can't find a good job out there, that I shouldn't be blowing my money on gaming shit.

Now I agree with that statement, and it makes sense, but I really want to put my money into this. I have over $400 now in my bank account, and want to put it towards this, but I can't persuade my parents into letting me.

Any good things I could say to get them to let me buy it?
Man im having the exact same problem with my parents...but its not about a 8800 Gts...Its about my new rig that i wanna buy soon...it worth like 2700$

They say pretty much the same things...no real income etc etc.

The decision is up to YOU man...you can take time to hear advice but YOU decide!

Exactly.  While a car will get you girls instantly (no joke, I have seen many fat, ugly guys all of a sudden getting nice looking girls, even with a shitty car) $300 is nothing on a car that is decent, especially since you are Canadian.

If you don't have a steady income, I'd wait on the graphics card.  Although, since I own an 8800 GTX, I can definitely understand your interest in the GTS.  BFG Tech rocks.

If you're looking to save some money, you may be able to find a used GTS, but I'd have to ask my brother about where you're best off buying one.  He's good at finding that kind of stuff.

Well yeah, I'm mowing a lawn for this old lady, she pays good lol.
And I get my learners license when I'm 14, and can drive when I'm 16. So in 7 months, I can drive without a parent in the passenger seat.

I'll have to settle with DX9.
Just get an 8500 then when they come out, they'll be within the 100$ range I think.  Though they'll probably suck since they're entry level in which case you should get a lower end 8800 or an ATi Radeon HD 2900 or a 8600(mid-level) when they come out.

I picture someone just putting an 8800 in the street and then sitting on it and putting a random key into the card and twisting it around expecting the engine to turn on, lmao.  I know, I have weird thoughts.

Listen to your parents and save up for a car.  With a car you can get a job and spend even more money on your gaming fixation.

Yeah in all seriousness Cryan, a car will go a longer way than a video card. Niels Bohr is disappointed in you for asking such a question.

Spell Check. Its right next to the submit button.

And to the OP, I think you should get a job, and save your money for the car. Or if you plan on going to college, save for a laptop for college. You have a 7900 right now. I have an ATi X300. and I have no plans on getting a new card anytime soon, and I have a job and 400 dollars in my bank account. Saving your money is always the way to go.

Dude, this is an easy choice.

Get the 8800gts.
Tell your parents in a stern and manly voice with your chest puffing out "Parental units, CRYSIS IS COMING OUT, (leave out "soon") and I MUST have this video card to play it." Your parents will understand instantly, no joke.

Seriously though, you probably should save your money for a car, and get a job that your parents can drive you to. Then make enough money so you can buy a car and the 8800gts at the same time, because you can be saving money from the gas you don't have to pay for and the insurance, since your parents are driving you to work.

Listen to your parents. If you have a car, you can get better pay, and afford a better rig altogether (or a better car, at the rate you're saving money). An 8800 GTS isn't even top-of-the-line of its class and'll be outdated soon. A waste of money.

Save your money so that you will have enough to buy a car and a video card.

And ATG is right. Unless your parents are really messed up, listening to your parents is always a better choice.

They have more experience than you.

here are some other income suggestions for young people:

+ get a newspaper route
+ start up a grocery delivery service for older people (of course this might require a car and you driving) but perhaps you could do it with a bike and a trailer on your bike if grocery store is nearby.
+ tutoring service for students.  if you are good at something, maybe you can charge some $$$ to tutor people that are having difficulty in a subject.
+ charge $$$ to move things - especially those older people.  things that old people don't want anymore, you could try to sell on e-bay or at the salvation army.  you might work a deal out with someone you know that has a car if you cut them in to the profits.
+ apprentice at a HVAC/fuel oil delivery shop.  i did this to help get some $$$.  they usually need a gopher (go for this, go for that), so you just get hammers, wrenches all day and get $$$.  This goes for painting, carpenters, plumbers, etc.  again, here due to your age, this might be a problem but you can try using family connections.
+ recycled goods.  everywhere you see empty cans and bottles and newspaper, you can (with a trailer on your bike even) transport this to a recycler and get some $$$.
+ if you are good with computers, offer your services out like a 'geek-squad' kind of thing that they have at best buy.  people are always having problems with viruses and spyware and don't know what to do.  what you can do is either try to fix it or at worst case, simply duplicate their photos, music, etc onto a separate hard drive (that the customer pays for) and get them up and running with a fresh windows install and reinstall their pictures and what not.  most people don't know how to do this or don't want to do this.  they just want it fixed.
+ if you know web stuff, offer your services for a reasonable fee to a house of worship, community center, etc.
+ flea markets/yard sale.  work with your parents to get together all your stuff you don't want and sell it.  if you organize the event, you can probably get a good cut of the profits and your parents get rid of junk they don't want.  velvet elvis painting?  gone!
+ computer recycler.  put add in paper that you'll pick up and dispose of old computer and electronics equipment.  for a fee you can take these items to the dump or recycler for people.  again, alot of people don't know how to get rid of these things responsibly.  alot of the equipment contains toxins, etc that you don't want in the regular dump or landfill.
+ create a website and beg for it (some guy did this and it payed his way through college)

some of the things i listed above might sound like you need a car to be practical but perhaps you can get by with a bike or even a scooter.  where there's a will there's a way.

for 1-2k you can indeed get a car.  it won't be the best car but you can have a car.  the problem is of course what it costs to run it (maintenance, gas, etc).  these cars typically break down and require the shop to fix it as parts wear out.

Also, insurance as a young man < 25 will kill you.  i remember when i was 17 or 18 i was paying about 1300 per 6 months on a four cylinder crap car.

i say save for the car.  once you get a car, then it will open up the doors for more $$$.

you can always beg for a new computer or graphics card for holiday/birthday present.  make a deal with your parents to get your grades up or some other goal.

Also, instead of just playing computer games, why don't you just find some other hobbies like basketball or soccer?
They cost a lot less than computer games.

If you can't replace the adrenline rush you get in a FPS, then try airsoft or paintball.

They are more expensive, but are still cheaper than computer games and are a lot better for your health.
