For a C2D than does not require overclocking you are probably looking at the E6600 2.4Ghz but that's just under £150. Intel reduce their prices on the C2D's on 22nd July so it should get cheaper after that but may take some weeks for the cuts to filter down.
Overclocking these processor's is not hard to do but if you are unsure it's probably best not to.

Things are made to be Oc'd, but, you could go for the new E6550, a bit slower but a newer chip, release date as buLLet_t00th said, save yourself like £20. And, I to, like you, didnt like the idea of putting a bit of hardware outside manufacturers specs, but, after reading all the stuff I have, you can save hundreds with a bit of faith
