Hakenkreuz = "Hooked Cross" = Swastika. Those three years of German at school wern't for nothing.

Did you know, and it's an accepted conspiricy theory that Hitler designed the symbol for Volkswagen? When you rotate and copy the symbol by 90 degrees four times you can erase some of the lines and come up with a swastika.

Then again you can also come up with the Union Jack, or a collection of tent-pegs, so I'm pretty sure it's grade A bullshit.

The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years. (That even predates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh!) Artifacts such as pottery and coins from ancient Troy show that the swastika was a commonly used symbol as far back as 1000 BCE.

During the following thousand years, the image of the swastika was used by many cultures around the world, including in China, Japan, India, and southern Europe. By the Middle Ages, the swastika was a well known, if not commonly used, symbol but was called by many different names:

China - wan
England - fylfot
Germany - Hakenkreuz
Greece - tetraskelion and gammadion
India - swastika
Though it is not known for exactly how long, Native Americans also have long used the symbol of the swastika.
The Original Meaning

The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.

Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.

On his way to school he went passed a church or a cemetary *cant remember wich one*.
There he saw the swastika's and whas facinated by them.

Yes I have Mein Kampf laying on my desk.

the joke with the guy falling off the guard tower is quite old, but always a favourite...

But in general, the topic is just too sensitive to make jokes about it. Although most of us most likely were born well after WWII, we should try to keep off Nazi jokes and stuff like that.

This stuff is just bound to be misinterpreted...

n00b.Worx, since you got some backfire from some members. Instead of determine the symbol is Nazi, just mention it is a Swastika symbol. As far as I know, Swastika symbol is good omen for centuries until Nazi ruin it.
Perhaps with hinsight he should have but i still think "Some" people should've taken the time to look before flaming him. As for the swastika it is also a Hindu symbol to help ward off demons (although in that case it is reversed) If there is anyone from the North West of England take a look at the Masonic hall on Ribblesgate in Preston (lancs) the entire building is ringed with them. And I took this from another site

"The swastika is common as a design motif in current Hindu architecture and Indian artwork as well as in ancient Western architecture, frequently appearing in mosaics, friezes, and other works across the ancient world. Ancient Greek architectural designs are replete with interlinking swastika motifs. Related symbols in classical Western architecture include the cross, the three-legged triskele or triskelion and the rounded lauburu. The swastika symbol is also known in these contexts by a number of names, especially gammadion. Pictish rock carvings, adorning ancient Greek pottery, and on Norse weapons and implements. It was scratched on cave walls in France seven thousand years ago.

In Chinese, Korean, and Japanese art, the swastika is often found as part of a repeating pattern. One common pattern, called sayagata in Japanese, comprises left and right facing swastikas joined by lines. As the negative space between the lines has a distinctive shape, the sayagata pattern is sometimes called the "key fret" motif in English. "

So there u go
