"Beijing has already implemented a series of measures to improve its residents' behaviour ahead of next year's Summer Games, including campaigns cracking down on spitting, littering, queue-jumping and smoking in public."

"Efforts to clean up the capital's image have gone so far as to ban male taxi drivers from shaving their heads and growing beards, while women cab drivers are prohibited from sporting hairstyles that are "too fancy"

What the hell?  You have to change your city for some stupid games?  Who the fuck is the olympic committee to say anything?  God knows the scandals and BS they are involved in.

I don't think it is the International Olympic committee is involved much in this.  More likely it is just the China Olympic Committee, as they are most likely being directed by the government.  It is different world over there.  You should see some  of their initial efforts at adding english to many of there public signs and such.  People complain about translations on here, they would faint at those.

I'm willing to bet most of the athletes will be sick while staying in Beijing. The city is pollution central.

COme now, Beijing's not THAT bad.

I don't think it is specifically because of the games, it's just an international opportunity for them to change how they are perceived to the rest of the world.

That's the point, China is trying to clean up their image.  They are enforcing the fines for having more than 1 child again.  They are trying collect money anywhere they can to help give the place a facelift.

Exactly. China wants people to think they are the best. It's in the culture to save "face"

To Cowami:

There was a school trip for an MUN conference in Beijing. 3 people came back in wheelchairs because of a very very bad flu.

I thought that was the Japanese.  Anyways, I do believe they (the government) want people to believe that China is better off than they really are.

China, Japan, and Korea all have that mentality, in general. Dunno about any other Far East Asian nation.

Any country of Chinese decent eg China (Duh), Japan, Korea, Taiwan etc all want people to think they're better than the other. It's the cultural mentality.

Seriously, I knew this one family that bought a goddamn Lexus when they clearly couldn't afford it; all in the name of the "having a somewhat nice car will restore my honor" mentality. Should've done something better with that money.

I agree with that.  I just think it is more pervasive in Japan.  Probably due to generally higher standard of living.

Anyhow, in regards to the OP, I don't think it was the Olympic Committee driving this.  I feel it is the government directing these things to not be disgraced once all those foreigners show up.
