Intel P965 or Nvidia 680i?

Hay guys,

wat r ur thoughts regarding these 2 chipsets?

I was looking at getting this mobo here:

Asus Commando LGA 775 Intel P965 Express

Looks pretty gud to me, got some nice reviews as well.

My only thoughts being, would it be better to go with a mobo with the 680i Chipset?

Id be getting an E6600 (oc'ing it to at least E6700 speeds) and putting a 8800GTS 320MB in it, 2gb DDR2 800 and running XP.

I have only owned P965 mobos. A DS3 and a S3. Got my E6300 to 3.5ghz on the DS3 and the E4300 to 3ghz on the S3.

I was on a budget and these boards fit well with the budget and had no problems with G-Skill memory.

I got a P965-S3, and its pretty good. Only problem is that it doesnt have firewire ports.

I'm not an expert on this subject, but I wanted to point out that the ASUS Commando you posted won't run 2 graphics cards @ 16x, it will only run one @ 16x and the other @ 4x. If you are planning on going SLI in the future, you probably want a motherboard that runs both cards @ 16x, otherwise its like you're wasting money, isn't it?

first of all, to sexecuti0ner, the commando wont even run SLI. it would have to be a crossfire setup (the SLI equivelant for ATi cards). but nonetheless, i never liked the commando.

as for the chipsets, either one will be a good choice. they are both excellent chipsets. another chipset to consider is the new P35. its the P965's replacement, and it does an incredible job with everything. and since its newer, you should be chosing between P35 and 680i. those are the two current kings of chipsets right now.

so between the P35 and 680i, its just personal preference. if you want to SLI two nVidia cards, then the 680i is the obvious choice. if you want to Crossfire two ATi cards, then a good P35 board will be your victor. if you just want one card, just pick whatever board from a pool of both chipsets that has the best price, and, if its important, looks.

Awesome thanks, I'd probably never own 2 Graphics cards anyways so thats no biggie. Probably wont go for the commando now tho, will definately look at the P35

why, all those ROG boards are just overpriced garbage. the Commando is the exact same thing as the P5B Deluxe with some added unceccesary features and two more PCI slots, which i cant even think of a decent use for a third PCI slot.

and then the Striker Extreme, ohh god. why? just... why?

SLI doesnt run at x16 for each card only x8. or so ive read..

Not on 680i chipsets. True dual 16x SLI.

Yeah, it depends on what you really want. I mean personally, I would go for the 680i, but I am on the Intel 975x chipset at the minute.
