Not sure if Ireland has socialized medicine, but if this is what happens, I would rather pay for my health care.

Some people want to be on life support holding out hope a cure or something will occur. Is it expensive and almost hopeless? Yep. Should it be up to the individuals to decide? If you pay for it then damn straight. I guess when the government pays it is not up to the people. Now this happens in the US to the uninsured of course.

I don't know about the occupied Counties but in the Republic of Ireland if you have private healthcare the doctors do whatever you desire as long as the bills get paid. Those with medical cards are subject to longer waiting times and the machinations of the respective health boards. Anyone who can afford private healthcare here usually goes for it, the medical card system is just a safety net for low and average earners (it's means tested, it's not free healthcare for all lazy people).

That probably wouldn't happen in 'ye holy catholic Ireland' but I have to say that I agree with the UK courts decision. That's a waste of taxpayers money to keep someone alive when it's completely futile. You gotta die sometime - if you can't afford to stay alive then tough shit, start a charity or something.

As Braddock said in the Republic here we have both private and public. Public is free and available to anyone but takes a wait for not-so-amazing but adequate service whereas private means immediate treatment with added luxury. I'm sure it's the same in the rest of Europe including the UK.

If she's a Republican she can come down here and we'll treat her and return her to battle-readiness...

We have public and private here as well. You can go to a county hospital for free basically. Ask illegal immigrants and homeless people. So how are our two systems that different?

In the UK the NHS is not for just the poorest (immigrants, homeless etc.) its used by the majority
The private is if you want/need faster treatment with more luxury (and can afford it)

I've used both - my company pays for private so if I get ill they can get me fixed and back slaving as quickly as possible

I remember discussing this very similarity with Kmarion, I think we have exaggerated views of each others healthcare systems.
