Only market pressures and government intevention will get us off oil.  If the United States pulls out of Iraq, which seems more and more likely, then Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan and Iran will have a war over Iraq and its spoils.

When this happens the price of oil will sky rocket ($120-$150/barrel), and the price of gasoline will be $5-7/gallon.

Will this event help us get off of oil and force us to use alternative fuels?

Dunno, but it's an interesting question.

(I'm looking at studying Renewable Energy Engineering, so the alternative fuels idea isn't so bad... )

What? Break down the starch to form glucose. That can then be turned into ethanol (via the action of enzymes) which is the dehydrated (with conc. Sulfuric acid) to make ethylene... now if we can only turn ethylene into octane our petrol issues will be fixed.

That's discounting the energy actually required for the whole operation...

What's interesting is that more farmers are growing corn instead of other crops...which is actually raising the price of food.  I still don't understand why we have a $0.74/gallon tariff on Biofuel from Brazil.

An interesting idea.

Now that's just silly.
