Scrunch up a big pile of paper, put kindling/small sticks on, light in several places. Gradually add larger sticks/bits of wood until you have a proper fire. No fluid involved.
cotton wool makes great kindling, i start many fire's, in fact i can see three of the buildigns i visited today from my window.
lighter fluid = sucky cheats, use proper matches like swan matches or the big chefs ones, they cost more but they actually work and the match sticks burn properly too.

i always get things on fire, even the things that arn't suppose to burn, so how hard can it be
You used the wrong kinda sticks, they look like you took them out of a tree, which means they still have alot of moisture in them.. You're suppose to use dried up logs and wood.
Having dug many a firepit myself, I can safely say that is the WORST firepit I've ever seen dug.
damn, I need to get pictures on the 20ft bon fire we had this weekend, the flmes were pushing 40-50 feet for about 30 minutes before it calmed down. we had about 60 people there and nobody could get with in 50 feet of the damn thing it was so hot.

Use a damn lighter.
KINDLING! Small twigs, dry leaves, sawdust, one of those firestarter bricks...anything. You're trying to go from a tiny match flame to a whole log it looks like. Don't forget to save some of your bigs logs for later too once you get some hot chunks that have been burned and are giving off heat. When you do it right, you get a hot-ass bottom of the fire that will help light more and it gives off heat like a blast furnace.
