Hate Crime arrives in a small American Community

Every country and society has its share of idiots, thats perfectly normal. But what surprised me is that this happened in a small community, North Sarasota (6,738 people in 2000). Small communities are traditionally more law abiding.

On the garage door were obscenities toward the Islam religion and Allah. Firefighters called in the State Fire Marshall who confirmed the fire was arson. According to a preliminary report, there were 10 different spots inside the home where accelerants were used, accelerants could be anything from gasoline to alcohol. Firefighters also found a gas can in the kitchen.

Whats even "funnier" is that the family that owns the house comes from Bosnia and in the house it was painted "Fuck all Arabs"

Small communities tend to be more racist and intolerant to outsiders though. Shit like this pisses me off. They're acting just like the very people who made them angry in the first place. The stupidity of some is amazing.

The problem with small communities is that they are usually very tightly wrought. Once you're in that community, accepted as "one of them", you're like family. However, it's almost impossible for "outsiders" to get in, let alone people foreign to the country. I've had my fair share of racism and bigotry when I moved to Switzerland. I'm Swiss, but if you lived "on the outside" for too long - apparently - you become rejected in small towns.
It's really sad. There will always be those closed minded, uneducated people who hate people who are not exactly like them.

I moved from a major metropolitan area to a rural area.

Luckily I "fell in" and was accepted almost immediately but I can't believe the way some people think.

Actually, prejudice often runs high in rural communities. Therefore, I'd assume more "hate crimes" occur per capita in rural areas. Granted, "hate crime" is a bullshit term.

LOL... I would just call it a racially motivated crime. I just don't like hate crime legislation, because it takes the focus away from the criminal part: the crime itself. Motivation is important to examine, but I don't think prejudice makes a crime any worse than one done without that as motive.
