What's the easiest way to do it? And how come when I press ctrl alt del at the welcome screen and type in administrator it is password protected (it doesn't show up on the welcome screen with the icon)but when I go into safe mode it appears at the welcome screen and I can just sign into that without entering a password?
You can only log into it in Safe Mode. A bit of a security risk, but its quite handy if the bastards PW their account.
If you have XP Pro, you can change it under Computer Management. Home Edition, you'll have to get some 3rd party. I'll have a look in Tweak UI.

Safe mode: you can't do anything
Resetting Administrator Password: Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn password off / change password
Resetting Administrator Password: Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn password off / change password
If you have SP2, they hide Administrator.leetkyle wrote:

Ooh! Ooh! I figured out how to show it, gimme a minute.

Even if I can access the admin account I think I need to know the password to remove or change it...in safe mode the admin's password is non-existent, I went to control panel and the only option was to create one yet when not in safe mode admin is hidden at the welcome screen so I have to press ctrl alt del. Then I type in administrator in username but it's passworded. Either this PC was updated or I'm just one unlucky bastard 'cause it's pretty old ( PCI, without the E!!!....and 1.7 ghz!! ...wtf) How long ago was that issue discovered? Y'know...unpassworded admin accounts? Mine's passworded...goddamnitleetkyle wrote:

That shouldn't happen. Are you sure you're entering the Administrator - upper case A is important - username correctly?
That's not true.Cheez wrote:

I just don't use a password on windows, i put the password on the BIOS so to even get the pc to boot into windows you have to enter the password, mind you i did forget it once but shorting the cmos jumper fixed that, its a great way of keeping it secure as you can't bypass it withough having to go through the BIOS once you've shorted the CMOS to bypass it and set it all up again. So most people don't know how to do that and they don't know your personal BIOS settings so its obvious once its been done. But thats just what i do.
Doesn't help you much against remote access though does it?Noobeater wrote:

Oh wait I get ya now, just log in as Admin and change it
I had a look at my 'ooh ooh' and it works.
If you know your Regedit, go to
And add a DWORD 'Administrator', value 1.
Or get Tweak UI (I found this out afterwards ) and check 'Show Administrator in Welcome Screen'. This adds it under User Accounts too.
If you think Remote Exploit, no, that's not what I meant.

What's to stop me loading your computer in Safe Mode, making a new User and logging into regular Windows with that (if I needed to)?Bertster7 wrote:

It seems NoobPatty's original query isn't yet answered to its fullest.
You cannot, and I mean you really can't log into Windows as Administrator. It'd be stupid if you could, right?
Its just a Safe Mode precaution (so a Tech can always get in), in fact there's no point passwording it there either, as it just makes the Tech's job a pain in the arse.
True if someone tried to do something malicious to your computer they could log go to Safe Mode too, but Confucius say:
"Once a person has physical access to your computer, all security features are null and void".

Because I have a password on the Administrator account. So it would ask you for a password - whether it is in safe mode or not makes no difference.Cheez wrote:

You could remove the password, so long as you're not booted into windows, but the SAM becomes inaccessible when windows begins booting. To remove the password you could boot into another OS, Linux for example and wipe the password hashes from the SAM. This can be easily done using boot disks - but I have my first bootable drive set as my primary HDD, so you'd need to go into the BIOS to change that, but I have a password on the BIOS, so you'd need to wipe that, but my case has a lock on it - so you'd need to wrench that open first.
It's not entirely secure, as I've just pointed out the potential vulnerabilities, but it's secure enough for me.

Mmmkay...so it's impossible to remove the Administrator password in regular windows? It's just there for safemode? If I could just get rid of the main account's password momentarily then have it go back after I restart that would be great but to make it go back to it's passworded state I would need that password to put it back on, or else when my parents come back the password will be gone or changed and they'll know I did it, of course. That's why I want to reset the admin account. They never use it and they won't realize the password's gone. They probably are unaware of it's existence or else I wouldn't be in safemode w/ networking now. At least I can use IE...no iTunes though...or sound so that doesn't even matter.
Oh yes and if i knew the password to the account I wouldn't even be screwing with this.

No. Where did you get that idea?Noobpatty wrote:

Of course you can remove the Administrator password in regular windows.
I don't see why you would need to if you can log on as an administrator in safe mode anyway. Why don't you just create a new account and use that?
You could boot into Administrator in Safe Mode, and then make a new account?
u can format your harddrive and reinstall windows
that will sort it out
that will sort it out
*In comes lavadisk with some help*
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ophcrack/
boot that from cd and you can crack your parents computers password. dl the .iso and use infra recorder to burn the image.
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/
keep in mind that if your parents have a 16+ character password you cant use this. 15 is just over the md5 hash check for windows.
oh. Tell me if it works via pm. good luck

He doesn't have an Administrator password set, so that is all unnecessary.lavadisk wrote:

I might have misunderstood. I thought everyone was trying way to hard to gain access to a computer in his house. Thats the more logical means of doing that.
Go into safe mode, log into the administrator account. Change the password to the account, not that hard.
