depends on the offense, really. as if you are advocating people being shot for parking violations, say, while I have the greatest sympathy whit you  (some pricks around here really do redefine the meaning of bad parking. it shouldn't be a dogems ride trying to get up a hill) it isn't legal ( sadly). unfortunately the best we can legally do is release the pricks early.

Actually,  I think a good idea would be that inmates can volunteer to have organs transplanted to sick people. In exchange, they'll get the option of money being sent to thier familes, or victims/victims families.

Or, instead of making PETA bitch.  have a volunteer program where new drugs and products are tested on inmates.  its more affective to tell a human will react, than a rat or cat.

Or, for the chance at freedom (depending on the crime) after serving in some brutal war or battlefront for a period of time.

How about taking the option of a reduced sentence for doing some really shitty or brutal job for half of thier sentence?

Meh, you don't need to shoot them, just give them weapons to kill each other, with enough food for 15 days, and come back every month. You won't have to worry about them living to take you out when you drop new ones off, and you won't have to do any work either. This would also have to be a small island, no need for a big one.
