Eisenhower... back when the Republicans weren't being led by corporate shills, they had decent candidates. Eisenhower was the last truly great Republican president in my opinion. Forget Reagan....
Probably William Jefferson. Middle east peace efforts, Northern Ireland peace efforts, fiscally astute, more isolationist than previous presidents.
But he lied to a grand jury.CameronPoe wrote:

you forgot Alexander Haig

Ford was a pretty vanilla president. He didn't really do much.sergeriver wrote:

Most of the people who voted for Kennedy would probably pick Clinton as second best.
Clinton, he stablilzed the economy during his presidency and embodied the "new democrat" that we see today.
JFK

Clinton for fucking the interns.
Stabilizing the economy is good, but turning the Democratic Party into free trade advocates isn't a good thing.Masterstyle wrote:

Clinton and Tony Blair embody the problem I see with the modern left -- they economically sold out. There's not as much of a difference between the economics of the left and the right these days, and as a result, corporations have taken over our system to an extent not seen since the Gilded Age....
lol, our economy was fine before W. BushTurquoise wrote:

(clinton, but i've only been alive for the last 3, so yeah)
Kennedy for taking the nukes out of Turkey and saving the world.
For the most part, yes... The problem is that economic growth is often measured by things that don't really matter to the average worker. It doesn't matter how high stocks go as compared to how the average wage measures up to the cost of living. Ever since the 70s, we've seen a gradual decline in the purchasing power of the average citizen. We've also seen an ever-widening gap between the rich and poor and even the rich and middle class.genius_man16 wrote:

Reagan basically started this trend of corporatization of government policy, while Clinton continued it in a watered down version that was more friendly to the middle class. Both Reagan and Clinton deserve credit in certain respects, but what is disturbing is how similar they were when it comes to economic mindset.
The New Democrats were for economic improvement though, they raised taxes on the wealthy and cut taxes on low income families and small businesses which helped fix the disparity in wealth between the rich and the poor and balanced the government budget which caused the economic expansion we saw in the 1990's.Turquoise wrote:

If I'm not mistaken, that wealth disparity continued through the 90s the same as it has in this decade.Masterstyle wrote:

The problem is that the Democrats aren't thinking in terms of small business. If more Democrats cut taxes for small business owners and the middle class simultaneously, they'd slaughter whatever competition they have. The elite rich (those who make $5 million or more) are the ones who should pay the most in taxes. People who make between $100,000 and $5 million need tax relief just like the working class does, because they often have to compete with corporations that get huge tax breaks from local governments.
Don't get me wrong, I think Clinton was one of the better presidents we've had in recent history, but he's no FDR.
Left? Well, if you wanna call them left np. But being Liberal doesn't mean you are leftist, in this case means you are more moderate. Besides, I don't get why so many people here don't like Clinton, he was a good president, he ended this presidency with the highest approval ranking, 65% for a president after WWII.Turquoise wrote:

Who were the 7 nitwits who voted mr bush snr as the best pres? (must be like his relatives or something)
I say Ronald Reagan
I voted for Lyndon B. Johnson because as I recall from my history lessons, he was the one who introduced a lot of social improvements.
However, there are only two votes for him so it would appear that I have overlooked something

Ike, because he was a rational leader. He tried to insure security and prosperity, but also realized the dangers of being too weak or too militant.
...although he did approve the Bay or Pigs invasion, OOPS!...
