"DirectX 10 also places new demands on graphics card developers (primarily Nvidia and ATI) as there are quite a few new features that they have to support. DirectX 10 breaks from tradition by not being backwards compatible with DirectX 9, however there will be a separate version of DirectX 9 in Windows Vista so legacy games should work without too many issues (well that is the theory!)"

I was just reading up on dx10 and it looks like that some of the dx9 games might not work when you install dx10....You would figure this guy that made the website would know for sure but now this is kind of annoying to know. Basically it's 50/50 if it works with dx9 games...how gay is that.

Yeah and then DirectX 10 doesn't work with Windows XP either.

Couldnt the dx10 card just revert to dx9 when needed, since those 8800s can play bf2/2142 in dx9 now?  Meh, I dunno, I am sure there will be some sort of backwards compatibility software to address this, or as Poseidon said, somone will be in for a smack!

How old is that article?
People have been playing DX9 games in Vista for ages, there are very few issues. What is the point of this ridiculous scaremongering thread.

Never. Not going to happen unless you fully change the windows API.

Bullshit.

Lots of people are doing it and I reckon Wine will succeed. They already have most of their framework in place and have a proven track record with this type of stuff.

On the DX9.0c implementation under Wine on Linux systems some DX9 games even run faster than they do in Windows environments.

Did they modify the API or something?

Kind of, they translate DX commands to OpenGL commands. All D3D10 features are supported under OpenGL.
