A wave of secularisation is again sweeping through industrialised nations, but will it come around to our corner of the world? Even though Singapore is on the same economic development scale as secular Western countries, experts say atheism in the city-state is a distant possibility. In a study, Dr Pereira discovered that Singaporeans value religiosity and it is "deeply embedded in society"..

For some religious leaders, atheism is no reason to lose sleep over..
"If there is a war, it has been going on for the last 300 years and atheism is clearly not winning," said Dr Simon Chan, a professor of systematic theology at Singapore's Trinity Theological College. .

"Previous generations of atheists had been no less vehement and hopeful, but a vast majority of the world's population are too incurably religious to be bought over.".

Meanwhile, new books are coming out that show an interest in listening to the atheists' criticisms. How many copies they sell will be another sign of the times.

It's probably got to do with the large Buddhist populace/history.

This development may seem odd to some people but it is definitely a concrete reflection of a multi-racial and multi-culture society, which in turn depicts the grace of Buddhism
Not all religion is bad.

there is no caning for spitting on the streets.
however, there is a rather strict littering policy here, but that keeps the streets clean.

on another note;
before anyone can pass judgement on another country, one should either find out all the facts or come and live in the country for a while..

@turquoise; you never know, you might just like the place... or not.

edit:
on topic; i know of many atheists here in Singapore..

I was curious enough to go and look this up.  Fuck indonesia, fuck that country, fuck it with fire!  It just left my list of countries I'd like to visit.

Incidently, if one adds up the ASCII values of the characters which make up INDONESIA, one arrives at the grand total of 666...

Oh well that's just a brilliant quote.  Yes, let's ask the religious professor of systematic theology at Singapore's Trinity Theological College about what he thinks of religion.  Genius I say.  Why don't we go ask the coach of the New York Yankees who he thinks the best baseball team is?

It's impossible to try to police religion the same as trying to police morality.  The problem is who the hell defines what those mean?

I'm not religious, but I am very spiritual.  I was baptized Catholic but I honestly can't support a religion that moves pedophiles around instead of punishing them.  I'm all for forgiveness and everyone deserves that but actions have consequences.  So I looked to what makes sense to me and Buddhism was it.  I don't call it a religion because Buddha would never accept being deified.

It's funny because I'm from Canada and this week I've been in Singapore (I'm sitting at my hotel room desk right now actually) and with the true melting pot that I've seen here there has to be atheism.  I've seen Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Christian so why can't there be atheists?

Besides, the worth of a person is not measured by what temple they do or do not attend.

Course there are atheists in Singapore. I lived there for 3 1/2 years and saw and knew many. Especially in the international schools. Love that country. And you only get caned in school, not for spitting. Though you do get a hefty fine. Though seriously, if you saw how much some people like to spit there, or at least clear there throat, you'd understand why they have that law...

Man, too many bad sounds to hear on the bus...

Business for the first 3 days and holidays the last 2.  I'm loving Singapore and I'm already planning to come back for an extended period.

The taxis crack me up to be honest.  In Canada we pay through the nose to go anywhere by taxi (10 blocks is like an 8 dollar fare), and they expect to be tipped rather well.  I had a cab ride from Suntec to Vivo and I tipped the gentleman S$2.00 and his reaction was one of true gratitude.  I've never seen anything like it before for what amounts to lose change for me.

But my Beer costs way to much here!

Actually, today is my last day here.    I fly out early tomorrow.
