Alright well, I'll be coming into some cash soon, and I'm toying with the idea of buying a joystick for BF2, solely so i can be one of those UBER LEET JET PWNERS OMG.

Seriously though.  I enjoy flying jets for fun - I can get a few kills with them; I'm terrible at bombing, and can never shoot anyone down - but they can't get out from in front of me.  I think a joystick might help me improve a little bit after practice.

I have a Saitek Evo 9 that I don't even bother with.  I bought it for BF1942 a while back and the responsiveness on this is so terrible that I couldn't stand it for more than 5 minutes and went back to the mouse.

Suggestions would be nice

saitek x52 is by far the best out there but at $120 its a lil overkill for BF2 - great for flight sims - i used to use a microsoft force feedback 2 and it was great but the throttle control sucked...the throttle of the x52 is awsome - great chopper control and you wont even use 1/4 of the buttons and knobs on the thing...u can set up 3 different profiles and swap between them on the fly - 1 for jet, 1 for cars, and 1 for choppers or whatever u want...the buttons are all doubled up using the pickle button (think iof it as a shift key)

Logitech Extreme 3D PRO

Its a brilliant stick, loads of buttons, 3 axis for pitch, roll and yaw on the one stick, throttle slider, its even got like an 8 way thumb stick on the top of the joystick, good solid build (doesnt feel like its gonna fall apart in a month) its not overly expensive either.

Ive been using mine for a while now, Id never go back to mouse flying, I know some people can get good results with mouse but definatly not me.

The two best sticks on the market are the Saitek X52 and Logitech Extreme 3D Pro i have the latter and its a great stick and i know people who use the Saitek and love it so just look at what you can afford and if you want help setting it up i can hook you up with both types of settings but i reckon both a great investment for the game

I'm curious if anyone else has the same problem.
The throttle lever is very sensitive. If I pull it back only a few millimeters my speed falls rapidly. I think the idle position is somewhere in the middle of it's way. Is there anything I can do to assign the idle position for BF2 somehwere near the zero position of the throttle lever? I don't need the same way for forward and reverse

Yeah I have the same problem, buts it the way BF2 controls the throttle, not the joystick.

You see most throttle sliders you find on joysticks are set up for an anaologue set up, like any number of flight sims and space sims where you control the throttle gradually. In BF2 there are only 3 settings for the throttle, foward, backwards and none. And really this would be better suited to a digital input (like normal buttons)

The in game control set up for planes is pretty basic, so I doubt you are gonna be able to do what you said in your post, bassically I think you just have to practise like hell to find the 'null' point half way through your slider axis. Either that, or keep flicking the slider back and forth to create a 'null' like effect.

I have a thrustmaster top gun fox 2 pro shock. *whew*
Its kinda old (about 3 years) but it gets all jiggly when i shoot and its comfortable as hell to boot. A good joystick all around with 11 buttons and a built in throttle.

I wanna buy a joystick too and i also discovers this nice stick on the net, but there is one question left. Maybe I'm not well informed..
Z-Rotation is if u can rotate the joystick like when you open a bottle, isn't it? Is it what you do with the keys "S" and "D"?
And if, saitek cyborg evo has it or?

Maybe, every new joystick has it, but well im not informed about joysticks technology

The Logitech 3D Extreme Pro is a verified piece - o - crap.

I have two that have started the phantom wander.....They will break w/in six months.  You pay the shipping - I'll ship the two I have to anybody interested.

I'm currently using the Saitek Evo......wish it had more buttons but like it.

I have the Saitek Cyborg Evo as well and am extremely pleased with its quality and control capabilities.

The main thing with this stick is that it is completely ambidextrous so you can easily switch a few things and it is good to go for left- and right-handed players. Lots of buttons, ergonomic and it looks sweet. The trigger and 3 secondary buttons can be tilted to your liking.  Very customizable!

Another good thing is that you can calibrate it on the fly (while in-game) by rotating the stick around a couple of times if you find that it wanders off centre (it never has wandered on me once so far).

I have had it for over 3 months and it is like it is still new except for some dead skin cells (dust ).

Saitek Cyborg Evo is a sweet joystick.  My friend has one.  I have the Saitek ST290pro (downgraded cyborg evo).  I like it a lot.  I fly choppers sometimes and feel much more comfortable with a larger throttle.
Oh, and to AppeL, Z-axis is "rudder" on most people's configs.  It is like the A and D keys.  It I how most people turn choppers.  Not all joysticks have it.  That is why I went with the Saitek ST290pro.

Zapata, nice quote.

Hey guys,

For those of you who have the throttle problem, it's not your joystick, it's the game.  Dice got almost everything right, except for the jet controls.  They seem to be under the impression that with anything less than full power, your jet will drop out of the sky.  I have the same problem when I pull the power back just a hair, the things slows right down and hits the ground.  It's a real pisser, but it's in the game, not your joystick

Buy hey, what do I know, I'm just a pilot

cyborg evo

it has enough keys for everything and it has all 3 axis

anyway about that throttle thing

you don't have to put the throttle in middle position.

from your current throttle position, just put it up/down a little and it will stay as it is

That's when you calibrate it.
I love both logitech and Saitek, but they're two different things.
You can't calibrate a spring,  Saiteks eventually wear out on one side and you can't do anything about it but have a wanderer.
Electronics can be calibrated. I think I like my Logitech better.

As RAIMIUS said, it' called rudder control and yes, the Saitek Cyborg evo has rudder control. It's so easy to alter your heading a few degrees while approaching the target.

dont have any throttle problem with my x52...i can throttle up or down quickly to a speed i want from 0 to max...i even set it up to when im full throttle my after burner kicks in...at 99% im at full throttle (without burner)

with saiteks SST software you can customize every button, slider, knob and settings on the stick and throttle - a guy even made a BF2 profile which makes set-up a breeze (i just edited it once for the full throttle/after burner setting)

use saiteks forums for quick responces on joystick assistance (have to register to access everything for better help)

I had a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro break on me as well, and go into "phantom wander" mode. After about 6 months, I was having to calibrate it after every single bootup, and had to exit the game sometimes to calibrate it mid-session. It sucked.

I've had 2 Saitek Cyborg Evos now, and only bought a second one because the drivers allow for you to calibrate it on the fly, so I could do it while playing just by rotating the joystick in a full circle a couple of times.

All these $30-40 joysticks are bound to break after 6-8 months of regular use. That's why I invested in an X52.

Love it.
