I just upgraded from a x850xt to an 8600GTS.  Now whenever I play a game it is fine for 5-30 min the screen goes black, I lose video output, and have to do a hard boot.
Also when I watch a movie, the colors tend to flicker a little like they are having trouble stabilizing.
Is this just a bad card, software, what?

Note: When I lose output, the computer is still running normally and I can hear the game.
YES I have the latest drivers.
NO this is not related to other hardware (RAM, CPU, MOBO)

Edit: I don't crash or get a black screen when I'm out of a game.

Whats you psu?

your card is probably overheating, when a processor overheats (hence the GPU) it tends to lock up.  So this brings me to this question, do you only have to hard boot it while playing BF2?

I agree with weerdfoo, sounds like it could be overheating and locking up. What are your temps?

Temps are between 50 and 60 C.

Yes, I only have to hard boot while in a game.  It never does this when I'm not playing.

I edited my problem.  I had a brain fart I guess and skipped a few things.  Sorry.

Personally, I think thats to hot for it to run smoothly, but then again, I mostly just know that most good CPU fan's will run a CPU at 35C.
As for the flickering when watching movies...first What kinda monitor do you have, and what refresh rate and bit depth do you have your video card at?

Thats pretty cool for an 8 series from what ive read, and It doesnt sound like a power issue(with your updated info) although not having a suffcient psu could still be a factor, whats the brand and wattage?

Think he was referring to GPU temps, but I could be wrong, and if Iam that is a bit high.

60 load aint too bad.  My second 7900gt gets about that hot. Hmmm, if you can try another video card, then you will know for sure if its DOA.

Before I got this new card, the temps were the same.

Monitor: Acer 19' W
R.R.: 75 Hertz
Not sure about bit depth: 32 bit?

Well, r2z00 could also be right, it is possible that the video card isn't getting enough power and so it just fails...

Thats what im guessing, going from an x800 to a 8 series is a bit of a jump in power requirments.

Antec 550 W.  The graphics card is an ASUS Silent (no fan, awesome heatsink).  Anyway, thats a lot of power for a GPU to suck up.

Also, thanks for the help.  This is something that could be any number of problems.  Hopefully someone can help me narrow it down.

Well you power supply seems up to the job, you do have the PCI-E power connecter on the card correct?(silly i know, but gotta be sure)  as that would result in the card not getting nesscary power.  As for overheating, on myNvidia driver(might differ with yours) It has a feature to track GPU temp over time, enable the feature, run a game with the issues, after it blacks out exit the game and check the temps.

I ran the program and never got above 58C.  I think this may have something to do with World in Conflict.  This is the game that crashes for me.  BF2 doesn't seem to so I may have to do something about my Beta.  Thanks again for the help.  I still can't figure out why the screen sometimes flickers when I watch a movie though.

Your first mistake was getting the 8600

Grudingly agree, cheapest of the 8800's isnt that much more

Theres no point in these mid range dx10 cards, buy a high end dx9 for the same cash

Exactly, on the lower end all you paying for is DX10, my 7600GT is comparable to some of the lower end 8 series, sorta sad really.
