Funny thing is I just reformatted my computer and installed all the needed hardware so I shouldn't be getting this. I'll do that HDD check today to see what happens.

And no, I'm on cable as we speak, and even if I'm on wireless I shouldn't have any problem as i am only at most 5 feet away from the modem and playing CS:S gives me 50-60ping not a huge drop but BF2 >.

Yep, it is probably your hard drive slowing down. It happens to me alot. For about 5 minutes at the start of each game, my hard drive would be busy doing something, and it would severely lag my game in the way you described. I don't know of a fix, I just live with it for 5 minutes.
i do.  u have to lower all of ur grfx settings tbh.

i got 2.2 amd proccessor
9800 se grfx card
1 GIG ram

and other sucky specs.   im running everything on low with aa turned off at 800X600 and view distance at 100% loaz.  runs ok tho and i dont have to worry about the lag at the start of a new map anymore.

I have no idea why in the hell I am lagging like crazy on almost every server I go on?! I have on average 6000kbps down 350 kbps up from speedtest.net and I usually get an ingame ping of 44 but I always ALWAYS receive in game lag(this is definitely not due to graphics because I have 60-70 more or so constantly depending on map.) Is there a tweak/userconfig.txt or something of the like that I can change to change this? I basically can't play this game smooth online.
farcus....scut farcus? I didn't think so.

I get that lag too, its not necessarily your ping, but the ping of the other players that screws me, if I am near someone with a higher ping, I start jumping around and skipping, its sucks, just play on servers where they kick for high pings.

Other player's ping shouldn't affect you in that way at all.

1.- Get more ram, 1 GB is NOT enough, even at low quality. 2 GB is enough.
2.- The processor could be a little "slow". Get a processor with 2.5 Ghz or more.
3.- check services and what other programs u r running while playing. Disable what you don´t need (msgr, yahoo, nero, etc.) to run at the same time.
4.- check your conection while playing. is your ping "jumping around"?
5.- Get an optimizer program (tuneup utilities, system mechanics, etc.) to fix anything that is slowing your machine.
6.- Defragment the hard drive. Get diskeeper or any other similar program. put the program to defrag the hard drive when you are NOT playing.
7.- Disable autoupdates at all your programs or schedule them to update at times you are not playing.
8.- have patience, could be the server you are connecting. try playing at full 64 people iron gator. you will see a great LAG.

Most things you say are right, aside from the first. 1 gb was enough to run my old rig, on med / high settings with around 40-50 fps constant

One way to check how much ram u r using:

- Start BF2
- Join a server with a big map, like Highway Tampa.
- After u have loaded the map and are IN the game do a ctrl+alt+del to go back to desktop.
- open task manager, check in the Performance tab how many PF u r using (thats ram). Add 10% to that and that could be what u need AT LEAST.

2GB is always helpful.

but i think with his hardware, he should try low gfx-settings first.

Are you serious? I mean I wasn't expecting all the eye candy but x1400 isn't that bad I need to move things down to look like dog turd. God damn I can't wait to get a 8600Mobility so I can say fuck this shit.

I am going to try low setting and see how it is but oh god my eyessss.

Ok so I tried lowering details and it definitely had a HUGE impact but I don't get it though... My in game fps is around 40 but if I put texture setting to high the game skips around a lot, at medium is more tolerable.

granted this isn't the fastest laptop for gaming, it does decent enough for me to play CS:S around 50-60fps at 1028x768 with 2xaa. I get 40-80fps for bf2 online and offline but whenever I go online it gives me the worst lag ever WTF?!

Btw I have no problem online with CS:S, none what so ever! I'm quite sure 6000kbps down/350-400kbps up is not the problem as that is my internet speed.
You should definitely try the lowest settings first, because your processor ain´t strong and the gfx-card sucks, too. it shares its memory from your ram, which isn´t much at all, when windows xp + bf2 are running.

my gf had a very similar notebook and she had to use all low/off and a sight of 90% to get fps in the acceptable range.
if your system produces more than 40fps, then you can try to adjust slightly to some medium settings.
or better try to use a higher resolution first.

btw.: what soundsettings do you have? does your system supports hardware sound? if it does, then use it. if not, set it to low, too. without eax and voip. every byte counts on your system.

Laggy = 1gigram

Get another gig... problem solved.

This game really requires 2 gigs to run correctly.

okthxbi.

1. i don´t know, if your notebook has the capability to get upgraded with 2gb RAM
2. lower graphics have more effect, than 2gb ram, because it is your hardware, which sucks.

Nah I am getting a new laptop to retire this so no need to upgrade, but yeh I guess this does blow I have to play at low texture filter, medium texture, 2xaa, =/ oh well I bet my soon to be 8600GT would solve all that.

I am surprise your laptop has not melted. I think the problem you have is your laptop (videocard) is getting over-heated. the ati1400 is more or less equal to the nvidia go 7300.  I have tried BF2 on my laptop C2D 2GHz (memron), Nvidia 7300, plus 2 GB of RAM and SATA drive. I can only run BF2 at very minimal settings...after a while the screen gets choppy cuz the video card gets super hot. I am not sure on the Intel Centrino handles the game but that can be a factor too.

Well the laptop have overheated before but that usually just lead to a blue screen with something about hardware malfunctioning and this only happen about 5-6 times over the course of a year and I play a lot of games.

If you play games a lot - don´t get a notebook again. buy a desktop pc, so you can upgrade parts easily from time to time.

This may or may not work but try a notebook cooler. one that has a couple of fans on the bottom.

here are some examples: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi … ook+cooler

I agree with KEIOS with his statement or get a true Uber-laptop which probably cost more than a high-end computer/monitor.

Really? Maybe your fan is broken? I run BF2 on my laptop and I only have 1GB ram and X1400 Mobility, and it usually isn't choppy except for the first 5 minutes. Although I have to set things down a bit, I find that disabling shadows makes darker maps like Sharqi a whole lot better
