I missed getting my own ass blown to bits in Tel Aviv by about 3 minutes. I had just walked up to my hotel room on Hayerkon street and flipped on the TV when they announced a bomb attack. Looking at the address, it was a place I had just walked by 2 blocks over. It was a small pipe bomb at a money changing place (mafia hang-out) next to a street cafe. BTW, the cafe was open for business when I took another walk about 6 hours later. They had simply put a white tarp over the mess and bought some new chairs for the sidewalk seating. Typically Israeli...
Despite that, I still never really felt "unsafe", even going into Gaza daily during my short stint as an ambulance driver for the Red Magen David. As a "non-jew" though, there is a certain glass ceiling you will hit eventually, like being told I needed to pay $3000 for my training in the RMD, which my jewish colleagues received for free or I couldn't work for them past 60 days. I came to the conclusion, after long (and sometimes stoned) conversations with other expats and Israelis that were decidedly non-Zionistic that Israel is basically run by the hawkish 22%'ers that have managed to keep control of their government for a long time.
The results of this long-term ultraconservative control are typical, horrific corruption at every level, a populace with an almost permanent nervous tick, social programs that can only be paid by foreign aid, barely livable wages, lots of "black work" to be found ("getting paid under the table" to you American types), crazy military spending, no compromise to ease the apartheid system, every vice is illegal but easy to obtain. Enough to make one want to be a liberal...

They aren't Jewish, they just have the paperwork. They're Russians/Eastern Europeans to the core. Israel, in their infinite wisdom, figured that the Arabs legally living there would "out-breed" the Jews in several years time, so they completely relaxed their immigration policy and let in about 9 Russian non-jews to every Jew.
