I think this is finally end-game for the poor people of Zimbabwe. I have a colleague at work from Zim who was there at Christmas and more recently and he couldn't describe how depressed the situation there made him feel. Mugabe is now consolidating his position as an actual dictator as opposed to an 'I got elected' dictator and will also be nationalising all foreign owned companies. I give the country 3 months max - Mugabe's head will be on a skewer somewhere: this shit just is not sustainable and something has got to give.

I'm kind of struggling to care but....................I can't help but think that this is a necessary step towards a better Africa.  Europe didn't become a stable, relatively free place through benevolent rulers.  It did it through war and bloodshed.  Africa (and much of the world) has (IMHO) yet to go through enough of that internally to develop and use it's own ideas of liberalism.

Don't know about other places, but surely Africa has had its fare share of bloodshed. A cookie to the one who ends that soab.

That country is well and truly fucked.  People are leaving in their droves, and not just whites either, many blacks too.

He'll come to a brutal and gruesome demise when he eventually does lose his grip on things. They don't do things by halves in Africa!

Nope that's how the people end up, in halves.

Yeah. The quicker he goes, the faster Zim can rebuild itself (try to at least).

Very good point, but the problem with Iraq was that it wasn't just a leader being disposed of, it was an entire government. The fundamental flaw in Iraq was assuming that a country can instantly adjust to an entirely different government and a whole new way of doing things. In the case of Zimbabwe, disposing of a dictator like Mugabe would suffice, as trying to combat the corruption in the government in general, which is symptomatic for pretty much all African countries is a process that starts elsewhere. You can't get far with a rotten foundation, but you can certainly get farther with a rotten foundation and a good leadership, than with a system that's rotten from top to bottom.

Most of which has been due to external forces.

I can assure you that Africa as whole has a vast surplus of "war and bloodshed."

When Mugabe bites the big one, Zimbabwe will be much better off.
