A lot of times I saw many members talking about people taking care of themselves, and that the government shouldn't be responsible for those who can't.

What does it mean to take care of yourself?  What is included?
Do you agree with the government never taking care of people who can't?
How do you know if people are poor coz of their own choices or coz they had bad luck?
Do you agree with this statement: "Charity organizations do a better job than the government when it comes to helping the poor"?
Where do you prefer your tax money to be spent, in foreign issues or helping your fellow countrymen in need?
How would your model of social security be?  Name the country that meets the conditions you like the best.

Footnote: I'd like to apologize for my rant of yesterday, specially to Kmarion.  You know how much I respect you.  My apologies to you buddy.  I deleted the topic.  Like someone said there, my opinion on where other country should spend its money doesn't count.  My apologies to all the members who felt offended.  This thread is about social security in any country not only in the US.

The UK independent age is 16-65. From 1-15 and 66+, you are deemed as dependant on others. The Government help out with the likes of a pension etc, and benefits if you don't earn much.

I used to work a minimum wage job during college and after for a while until I found work with my qualifications. I felt pretty sorry for the guys working there for the long haul. In this country if you're working minimum wage you would think 'maybe if you work loads of overtime you can earn more money and provide more for your family' ...not so, if you do any more than circa 12 hours overtime you get taxed through the eyeballs. So minimum wagers are kind of screwed.

I believe people who are in minimum wage employment and are trapped by our tax system like this deserve a little something extra for their tax Euros such as Medical welfare (like medical cards ...which they're not allowed at the moment). If a minimum wager gets badly sick it can be financially crippling.

Very simply, to make the choices that allow you to contribute to society in a positive way.

I absolutely agree that the government should step in and provide aid to its own citizens that are not able to care for themselves in some way.  Government should provide only limited support to those that can care for themselves but won't.

How do you know if people are poor coz of their own choices or coz they had bad luck?
You also left out a whole category, those that are poor because they chose to be a public servant of some kind, an underpaid soldier, rescue worker, or teacher to name just a few examples.  The answer is that you can't logically, there is no "special situation" and there will be exceptions to any policy.  You just have to bite the bullet and accept the greater good with the few bad apples.

Do you agree with this statement: "Charity organizations do a better job than the government when it comes to helping the poor"?
In a the most basic direct sense, absolutely.  Under the surface, only the government (and by extension the People that put them in power) has the tools to shape policy that makes the populace rich or poor on a macro level.

Where do you prefer your tax money to be spent, in foreign issues or helping your fellow countrymen in need?
Absolutely on addressing domestic issues first.  Any foreign policy is doomed to failure so long as it is hypocritical.  How can we police the world when we can't police our own back yard?  How can we curb religious extremism when we manipulate that portion of the population here at home or let them dictate our own policies?

How would your model of social security be?  Name the country that meets the conditions you like the best.
Germany or Sweden.  Sure people complain about taxes, but I saw nothing but smooth running public services during my travels to either country.  Public transport ran on time, cities were immaculately clean, you could walk into a doctor at a modern clinic nearly any time you felt like, you had your choice of highschools and the level of education you wanted, university education was guaranteed and free (or means tested).  This is the great equalizer...this is equal opportunity.  Nobody that is an adult can claim that they were shafted in the genetic lottery and nobody begins life saddled with debt they must crawl out from under.

IMHO the Federal Gov't has a responsibility to certain individuals.  These are called "Entitlements".

The only reason people should get cash from any gov't entity is because a Doctor says this person REQUIRES Assistance for Medical reasons.

Gov't subsidising of rent for people who are "low income" is a fair use of tax money if these people are working ANY kind of job and paying what they can afford in addition to their regular taxes.  I also think if these individuals are working they should be able to purchase some type of basic health insurance that would also be subsidized.

Do Charity Groups do better than the gov't when it comes to helping the poor?  I would have to say I honestly don't know, but I would think the Charity Groups do better.  For instance I've always known where the "Soup Kitchens" are because they advertise everyday in the paper.  Both offering to feed anyone that's hungry or take donations from those willing to give time or money.

I've heard that certain charities like Feed the Children are known for their fiscal responsibilities.  The cynic in me though has to believe they are the exception rather than the norm.  I've been associated with several Non-profit volunteer organizations.  Each one handled the funds they had pretty much however they wanted.  A Board of Directors can pretty much justify their spending.

I don't recall the name of the program but didn't GW have an initiative where he gave money to Church Groups?  I think something like this would be more effective in actually feeding people than anything the gov't could do for 100X the money.

IMHO this doesn't cross the Church/State boundaries because the gov't isn't endorsing the Religion since it's a multi-faith effort.

Where do I want my money spent?  Of course I'd like to see more spent on the Domestic side but I'm not an expert in our reasons behind the funding.  I have faith though that a vast majority of our foreign aide goes for legitimate "Nation Building".  Look at  the money we send to Israel.  How many Americans have relocated there?  How many of their citizens are here and paying taxes?

You want to know about social security?  Puh-lease I think my brain is bleeding.  Maybe next time.

What country does it best?  I don't know & frankly I don't care. I love my Country and believe we may not be the best but we're certainly not the worst.
