WTF is going on in the world of Sports here in the United States?

I can never remember so many big stories and scandals at the same time. Let’s recap what’s going on:

1 – One of the most honored records in all of sports is about to be broken by Barry bonds.  Yet the Commissioner of Major League Baseball refuses to attend the games where the record will most likely be broken.  Why?  Because Barry Bonds is a disgrace.  He has never been caught and never admitted using steroids but it’s undeniable.

2 – The National Football League, perhaps the most popular and profitable professional sport is dealing with one of it’s superstars in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.  Michael Vick is accused of running his own professional dog fighting league.  There are witnesses willing to testify Mr. Vick paid off the winners of dog fights in cash with amounts totaling over $20,000.  On a side note how’s Michael Vick’s younger brother doing these days?  There’s another model citizen for you.

3 – The National Basketball Association is dealing with one of their top-rated referees caught up in a point-shaving scandal.  The effects of this may never be known.  Those in the know say it’s not as easy to identify inappropriate actions as you may think.  We can’t just look at technical fouls and other penalties called but for the more subtle calls.  To manipulate the game as an official is done by way of traveling and lane restriction calls or other violations that result in turnovers, NOT freethrows.  These types of judgment  calls are difficult to pick-out.

4 – The professional soccer team from LA has given the biggest contract ever to David Beckham.  This is a player who is clearly on the down-side of a stellar career.  How much longer can he play at the level he used to?  I’ll give you a hint.  In the first game he was in uniform for he played on the last 12 minutes of an hour long match.  Sounds like he’s earning his money, huh?

5 – Professional Wrestling (Sports Entertainment) suffered an incredible blow to it’s image when Chris Benot murdered his wife & child.  This brought to light the number of these athletes who have died prematurely.  In case you missed it, John Kronus, another Tag-Team former Champion died last week.  In his 40s IIRC.

How are the fans going to react to these stories once all the facts come to light?

Baseball has suffered terribly since the strike and I don’t see their fan-base expanding.  Major League Baseball is in serious trouble my friends.

The case of Michael Vick will play itself out in court. I think the damage to the league will be minimal and forgotten quickly.

The integrity of the NBA must be called into question.  They’ve known this referee to be a gambler from reported sightings in Atlantic City, NJ.  This employee was also known to have other legal problems pending with his neighbors.  This guy was a known problem child since at least 2005.

Soccer?  Soccer?  If I didn’t get it by now I never will.  Soccer is taking over the youth of America though.  Boys, girls, it doesn’t matter, they love it.  Players like Mia Hamm and David Beckham are drawing our youth away from the great American past-time of baseball and its cousin Softball, both High-Arc & Fast-Pitch.

Professional Wrestling.  What can I say?  As a child growing up in the ‘70s with Cap’n Lou Albano, Chief Jay Strongbow & the like I loved wrestling.  That’s a far cry from what it’s become.  The stars are all gross misrepresentations of the human body.  Wrestling now = soft-core porn & soap operas mixed together.

I don't recall performance enhancing drugs EVER being legal.  They just didn't test for them.

My point exactly - isn't this the beginning of the season?

Isn't this when he should be in the BEST shape?

Wrestling isn't a sport. I just had to say it. And the actions of a few bad apples shouldn't reflect upon a whole sport.

Wrestling is a sport. "Wrestling" isn't though.

You needed to read a little more before you posted this T.Pike. The game that Beckham played the last minutes of was Chelsea vs. LA Galaxy, a friendly. All that game was was a media event designed to get publicity for the team and player. The game happens to be during MLS's All Star Break and none of the games affect the league table. So no, Beckham should not have to be healthy for the mid-season And also realize, MLS has been playing for a while now, and Beckham was playing before this for the England national team in Euro 08 qualifiers and helping Real Madrid in their La Liga title chase.

Also, Bud Selig plans on attending the game where Barry Bonds hits #756.

If the internet and 24 hour news channels had been around in the early 1900's, most of these stories you mention would pale in comparison.

Another point for T.Pike to just consider it: football (I reject to call it 'soccer') weakens two important joint in every player as time passes by, those are the ankle and knees. I can tell you approximately how many kilometers a champions league midfield player runs in a match, it's in the order of ~10 kilometers were maybe 35% of that distance are at full speed and the rest is just jogging.

That is just in a match, so you have to add training sessions which are held all week long (1 day prior to any match you do regenerative work), and sometimes (depending on the coach) they do double training sessions when they sucking bad or an important match comes nearby.

By that I don't try to minimize other mainstream sports, but Beckham held too many football matches in a short time span (Superliga Española, Champions League, Eurocup, Copa del Rey, etc.)

The ankle isn't a joint.

Haven't you all realized yet though that basketball, football, hockey and soccer are the same thing with different rules? The playing field is usually rectangular-ish and had two "goals" at both ends. The opposing teams are largely facing each other and one team has to take the x (ball, puck, ellipsoid*) to the other end and put it somewhere (goal, endzone, basket). The variations come in the rules where you have to use a stick, your feet, bounce the ball, carry it or pass it. It's a conspiracy, no doubt, to pit the world against each other by having them argue which version of the same basic sport is better.

You're really commenting on celebrity status.  The untouchable elite.  Monstrosities created by the public.  Lindsay Lohan disease?

Anyhow, I find it better to focus on the positive sides / influence they provide.  Agassi, Woods, Duncan, etc.

No, he's injured. Injuries happen, get over it. Barry bonds though, dispicable.

beckhams a lil wimp but he was hired just to draw people's attention to the club and make them money through sales of their products so i'd say he's done what he's being paid to do well they've had huge sales on tickets, shirts and everything else they sell and its given the club a huge amount of publicity and will probably draw more people to the game.

he's still a little gay in disguise though.

Out of shape is a good joke. I'd like to see you compete with a lot of those guys. It's a sport that has to grow on you, the liesurely pace is harder to enjoy initially, but if you have a good team to be interested in and good commentators, it's a great sport. Nascar is for pussies though, open wheel racing is where it's at.

I get paid to work out.  I wouldnt trust one of those guys putting on 60 pounds worth of gear, a full combat load and 130 degree weather in the shade.

And yet you could never throw a double play. Or an accurate throw from center field to home, in time to tag the runner. Or a 90 mph pitch. These guys are paid to work out too, they just have different goals.

I threw 87 mph fastball in high school, and carried a full combat load a year later.  Combat load pwns fastball.

Uh, he was injured when the transfer took place.  Just because he signed with a new team and it's a new season doesn't mean all his past injuries disappear.
