Its been a long day.

Started with an old HP TC3100 server refusing to boot ("Operating system not found"). Seems the two 18GB SCSI drives, or the software RAID 1 that controls them, is dead.

Could take it to be repaired - but its 5 years old, so why not get a new one eh?

Quoted from the guys who sold us the TC3100, for a "entry level" server they wanted £3k+

So, i went looking on the Dell site to find my own one - but im confused!

Can you help. pweetyy please (10 karma to give away).

I need:
Use for 3 - 5 workstations.
Windows 2003 Small Business.
2 HDDs.
RAID 1.
Ethernet.

Thanks soooo much.
/desperate.

PS been looking at Dell PowerEdge SC1430, but am confused by

SAS 5/i Integrated Controller Card for SATA and SAS Hard Drives [Included in Price]
PERC 5/i Integrated RAID Controller Card [add £190.00 or £7/month1]

What would allow me RAID1? And is it hardware or software RAID?

It should say which raid sets it does. Call and ask them maybe?

the cheaper raid that comes with it usually does not allow you do 1+0 or 5.  The first thing you have listed is just the general controller with no raid. The second addable option is the raid controller.

But yes, the addon raid controller will allow you to do raid 1 (hardware).

All i want is to be able to have RAID1 across 2 drives. Its a tiny network only mainly use for sharing info for an accounts / stock programme. Which will enable me to do that?

The second is hardware RAID (a physical PCI card), yes? So should allow RAID 1 (and a load of other multiple RAID levels).
The first is what then? (Ive got a couple of HDDs in my home pc with no controller - that i know of!) Does it handle any kind of Hardware RAID?

Sorry, to be super clear, by "addon" you mean the second one (ive been pissed around so many times today i need to be clear!)

Ahhhhh!!!!!

"Perc 5/i supports only SAS.  Do not buy this option if you will only use SATA."
Ill be using 2xSATA drives.

So back to the first one?

SAS 5/i Integrated Controller Card for SATA and SAS Hard Drives [Included in Price] - This is only a controler for drives sata and serial SCSI drives, it allwos the drives to act individually, but no raid.

PERC 5/i Integrated RAID Controller Card [add £190.00 or £7/month1] - This is the raid controller. Capable of 0,1,1+0,5 - Yes this will allow you do to do RAID 1 across 2 drives and this will be hardware raid.

I meant addon because it appears to an additional cost option.

the first one "SAS 5/i Integrated Controller Card for SATA and SAS Hard Drives" has no raid support. If they offer no more options you should be able to use a pci card that has additional sata ports + raid of which there are probally tons.

do you see this option ...

"Add-in SAS5iR (SATA/SAS Controller) which supports 2 Hard Drives - RAID 1 "

Thanks i appreciate the response but im getting so much conflicting information, "Perc 5/i supports only SAS.  Do not buy this option if you will only use SATA." But ill be using SATA - so this wont work?

So, you recommend the second one for RAID 1 with SATA?

Im sorry to go over and over, but ive got to get this right.

No You on dell.com?

Also, whats this "RAID Connectivity" about? Ill be using 2 SATA drives, and when configured with the PREC, it only allows me to select:

C7 Add-in SATA/SAS HW Raid 5, using the PERC5i controller, 3 Hard Drives add £0.00
C8 Add-in SATA/SAS HW Raid 5, using the PERC5i controller, 4 Hard Drives add £0.00

But those are for 3 and 4 HDDs!

I know im a pain in the ass, but could you go here and build me the best server for around £700.

(Needs to have
Use for 3 - 5 workstations.
Windows 2003 Small Business.
2 HDDs.
RAID 1.
Ethernet.)

Thanks sooo much.

But, why now go back to the first option. I thought that wasnt hardware RAID?! Ahhhhhah1!!11!!!!!!111

I can see myself spending hours on the phone tomorow to Dell why some indian woman tried to explain this to me

I guess you could choose the first one, but both cost nothing extra, why not get one that support both serial scsi and sata.

Under the heading "Raid controller" the default option is green is not a raid controller. Regardless good luck .. I don;t blame you for wanting to completely understand before spending your company's money.

Nooo lol. I was saying why go back to choosing the first "RAID Controller", as before you said i needed to get the PERC as this was a RAID Card, whereas the SAS is only a drive controller. Why now choose the SAS not the PERC?

I literally could not be more confused. Some one please slap me.

Under the heading "Raid Controller" you have two options ... option #1 is not a RAID controller, option #2 is a raid controller but it does not support SATA. The reason these are grouped is because they are integrated options.

Just pick the C6 option and choose what drives u are using. This would not be the first server I have ordered from Dell

For those that are interested, just ordered this from Dell (snipy, i found this on deal after all that confusion above!):

Dell PowerEdge 840,
Dual Core Intel Xeon 3050,
Silver 3Y (24x7) Premier Enterprise Support,
1GB DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz Memory,
SAS 5iR internal RAID Controller, PCI-Express,
2 x 160GB 7,200rpm 3.5inch SATA hard drive ,
48X 4G CDRW/DVD Drive,
Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet NIC,
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server R2 2003.

Not bad for £800.00 (much better than the 1.2GHz Pentium 3, 512MB RAM, 2 x 18GB server that it replaces!)

Thanks for the help (and bearing with me)

It was looking like it was gona be £1000+, but then i saw hidden away a magical and mystical "55% off button".

This button and i then had amazing click sex.

The PowerEdge 840 was born soon after.
