with your help i have just upgraded to crossfire (pair x1950pro) & a new psu (my 3D mark has tripled).

my motherboard is an asus A8R-MVP which supports sempron, 64, 64FX & 64X2. i have AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz fitted at the moment.

can you recommend a new cpu, heatsink & fan for this board. i understand 64FX & 64X2 is the way forward in i trying to put something together that will cope with the next generation of FPS such as crysis & cod4.

thanks.

FX-60 is the best CPU you can get. Alternatively a high X2 is good. If your into overclocking an Opterons will do the job nicely.

HSF wise: thermaltake ultra-120 is the best you can get. A scythe ninja is also good. Zalmans are very quiet. The stock cooling will do fine if you don't plan to OC.

yeah, although the difference is only 200MHz from the FX-60 (2.6 GHz) to the fastest X2 (2.4 GHz)

seems to be a huge difference in price between the 64 FX-60 & the 64X2 4800+.

I recently saw a AMD Athlon 6000x2 for 169 euro's. Pretty cheap, since a week earlier it was at 219 euro's. Which run's on 3.0 Ghz, according to the site given below.

It was on www.alternate.nl if you don't believe me.

if your mobo supports socket 939 then get an Opteron and overclock it.  i got a 170 (dual core) currently clocked at 2.6 with plenty of headroom left.  what kind of ram do you have?

can't give specifics on ram all i know is i buy crucial & i have 2 x 1GB sticks. 3200?

i don't feel competent overclocking btw.

looks like the biggest skt 939 is 4800+, prices seem cheaper.

FX's look pretty scarce & the prices reflect that (55 = £200 & 60 = £330).

yeah, not alot of socket 939's to choose from on newegg either.  unless you want to go opteron.  even a dual core opty running stock will be a nice upgrade for you. especially at the prices they are selling for.  165  or 170 right at the $100 range.  not bad.  then in time read so OC forums and get the urge to overclock.
