Recently it was announced that the Australian Federal Police are devoting 1/3 of their $1.1 billion budget to the development of an 'International Deployment Group'.

That is to say, AFP officers given APCs, Steyrs and military training so they can 'help' out on peacekeeping ops. The basic idea is sound, but I would prefer if the Australian Army had a battalion or maybe a regiment devoted to police tasks on peacekeeping ops, rather than arming a police force that can legally be deployed here where I live...

Who wants to start taking bets on how long it will take for the IDG to end up in the NT to 'sort' out our problems?

Yes, because Howard has shown an unwillingness to deploy troops in civil operations......................

There's a genuine need for this sort of formation if we're to continue in places like East Timor.

No, Howard hasn't, again that's my point. Why is this organisation outside the Army being given these responsibilities when the Army is more than capable of covering them itself if it is needed.

I'm not against the idea of the IDG, I'm against it part of a civilian organisation.

Because the military does not, and should not, have civil power.

The only real addition here is APCs. Everything else they already have.

The Australian Army already do take 'civil' action in Australia. What else do you call the building of houses and hospitals in remote areas?

I'd prefer giving the Army a little civil power over giving civilians combat support roles. That's just me as this really does seem to be the first steps down the path of a second 'military' being formed. Then again, maybe it's the birth of the only truly effective platform from which to fight political insurgency ('terrorists') within a nation.

I can see where the idea and need is coming from but ffs... Don't expect me to be comfortable with the idea. I'm within the AFP's jurisdiction on almost all matters, you aren't. It would be legal for the IDG to be deployed here in the NT. Unless there are certain legal provisions built into it's mandate to stop it from any domestic deployment.

I am worried that the Federal Police are becoming a government enforcer. Its not good.

Flecco: The way you get the army to act within its own borders and not violate any laws is to swear them in as local police.
