2 helicopters following police pursuit crash in Phoenix

Two helicopters following a police car pursuit apparently collided over central-north Phoenix.

12 News is reporting that police scanner traffic indicated that the two copters are operated by Valley television news stations. It's undetermined how many people were on board the craft and whether there are any survivors.

The crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. in Steele Indian School Park near Third Street and Indian School Road.

"It was surreal, it was like watching a movie," Chris Miller, a central Phoenix business operator, told 12 News.

UPDATE:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Two television news helicopters covering a police pursuit crashed and burned in a central Phoenix park, killing at least two people.

A KTVK T-V anchor tearfully told viewers that one of the helicopters was theirs, and that the pilot and photographer aboard were killed. KNXV-TV said the other helciopter was theirs.

The helicopters collided while covering a police pursuit of a man in a construction truck.

The helicopters crashed in flames in a grassy area of Steele Indian School Park.

I would have to guess there was one police helicopter and at least 3 other news helicopters, maybe 4-5 news helicopters in the air at the time.
Its extremely common to see a bunch of helicopters flying over something.

Also expect to see the live video from the two that collided. I have heard that it went out live on the air, then the video went out. I'm sure people with DVR's will be uploading the videos. One person told me they saw the heli view shake and then start spinning in circles before the video cut out.

"The suspect is now holed up in a west Phoenix house on the 2600 block of North 83rd Avenue."
Somewhere right around my house.

Well the suspect was captured after "swat" stormed the house with K9 units. The suspect is at the hospital being treated for his "minor wounds". The police have hinted that the county (?) attorney may charge the man with the deaths (manslaughter?) of the news helicopter occupants. Four are confirmed dead; one pilot and cameraman from each helicopter.

Although the news helicopters colliding doesn't happen everyday, people do flee from the police and seek cover in and on peoples property. My neighborhood is not the worst in Phoenix, but far from the best. I see the police helicopter searching for suspects and hear shootings on a regular basis. This is one of many reasons I am armed. You never know when this type of event is going to happen and when it is coming for you. So far the reports state that the suspect stormed into a house occupied by a pregnant woman and some children. If it was my home he stormed into and someone was home they'd be burring five people instead of four. I have no sympathy for violent criminals and people who commit these types of acts.

I have always felt that if someone flees from the police he should be charged with all violations, deaths and injures that occur from his fleeing. In this case however the news reporters were following the chase by choice and violated air space rules. I do not believe he should be charged with their deaths. He did assault at least one police officer, steal two cars, committed home invasion and risked many lives. We have yet to learn the details of the suspect or his criminal record. His actions today are enough to warranty the death penalty in my opinion.
