Installing ethernet controller

Everytime I start my PC it says new hardware found which is the Ethernet controller, I try to install it by doing trough the wizard but it just says can not install this software.

It has a big yellow question mark next to it in device manager.

Anyone have any ideas?

driver cd it came with or d-load drivers from manufacturers website?

ok, is there any branding on the thing itself? Like a company name or on the box it came with?

well i can look for some drivers for ya but i need to know who made it first. What does device manager say?

Is it a separate card (down the bottom), or is it on the big shiny plate up top?

If the latter, get http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-140.zip
It will tell you the motherboard, from that you can go to their website and get drivers.

If the former, I guess you can crack open the case and get the brand. If that's not there, get the brand and number of the biggest chip.

Device type: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 3, device 8, funtion 0

my dad has the same PC as me, where should it appear on the device manager?

Wait Ive just seen "Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection #2" under network adapters

It doesnt say ethernet anywhere but I dont think it appears under my device manager.

Wow, it would suck if you had to use on-board again, I would just try to buy a different ethernet card

card > on-board for everything except ISA slot cards but who uses those.

I suggest going to MS Windows Update website and select "CUSTOM" look at the "Hardware, Optional" link and see if there any updates. If it is your NIC and it is an Intel NIC, Windows Update will have an upate driver for it
